Here in North Dakota, we have been getting snow every week, and it seems I never get the chance to take it out of 4wd high! I’m sure I’m doing some long term damage to the t case. I have changed all proper fluids. Does anyone else drive around in town and some freeway driving in 4wd high?

It won't hurt anything as long as your tires can slip when you turn !

As long as you stay on bone dry pavement and make a lot of unnecessary sharp turns, you should be okay.

i lived in interior Alaska my entire life up until a few weeks ago and have never needed 4x4 for much more than escaping the neighborhood. Do you have decent tires and drive like a contributing member of society? IMOI; having never owned a vehicle that wasn’t 4x4, dedicated winter tires will get you further than locking in the t case....that is until the going get toughened the snow is approaching mid axel, or the weather get warm after a good snow and refreezes.

that said, my last taco never came out of 4x4 for no other reason than i wanted to scoot faster from relights and make bigger dust trails on the back roads....finally blew up at 500k but the t case was fine.

A little weight on the rear axle doesn't hurt either.

Don't go into a panic on dry pavement but leaving it in 4WD it will let you know it will fight you when you try to park but the drive line is a lot tougher than the tires grip just backup or drive forward with the wheels straight and twist the switch. I'm in Maine so it gets used a lot, often I forget it's in 4WD and with the last several Tacomas I have yet to break anything. It is hard on your mileage so just take it out when the road is safe. Ok guys you can start your rant now but be advised I have been driving 4WD's for 57 years and have yet to break U Joints, axles, drive shafts or transfer cases all though I sure have tried.

Thanks for the replies! I am running BFG KO2’s. Just installed my 2nd set, love them around here. We have 37” of snow far this year, and another 2-4” coming tonight, guess it will remain in 4wd high for awhile longer!!! Love this truck!

only 37" this winter? We've had 36" in two nights and i don't even have a 4wd lol I don't know what roads youre on but i dont see how you need 4wd on all the time, are there only 4wd trucks on the road? I feel like something is going to get damaged. I used to run 4wd on my plow truck when going lot to lot and that alone even felt hard on the truck in the worst conditions
