I have over 500 miles on my new tacoma OR 4x4 DBLCB. I am thinking of driving it all the way to the bay area (CA) from Baton Rouge (LA) and back this upcoming holidays. That's a good 4k miles round trip. I'm expecting to have a little over 1k miles in the truck by then. My question is that is it a good idea to be driving my new taco for that long considering the age of it? Has anyone driven their new taco long distance?

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.
Per Toyota, 1K is the break in period. I would think you're good, barring non-mileage related issues - like faulty crank sensors and the like.

I just did 2,000 miles, round trip, from Southern Virginia to Bar Harbor Maine, I haven't even tripped 6,000 miles on the truck yet and other than the usual transmission complaints (getting flashed next week) it's still as good as new.

There's a 86% chance the truck will melt, self-combust, and kill exactly seven nuns and three puppies. THINK OF THE PUPPIES!!

I had to drive mine 2000 kilometers from the dealership to home on the maiden journey. Avoid sudden braking and keep the speed to a maximum of 100 kph and it was a wonderful ride. It gets a 3500 kilometer trip in November however I will be into northern winter driving. Have no fear that already started this Thanksgiving weekend in Western Canada with snow in British Columbia and much of Alberta.

My main concern would be to find the engine dying along the way and having to deal with that during the road trip. I've read of incidents where their taco just went to shit. But so far my taco is running well, haven't noticed anything too concerning.

Don't worry too much about something that may not happen. But it is good to always be prepared, such as keep your warranty/manual paperwork with you, take extra food, water and clothing, emergency supplies, etc. just in case of any type of problem, whether accidents, weather or even a breakdown. Stuff happens but don't let worries keep you from enjoying your beautiful new truck!

Now we better start adding cam sensor to the list??

But whatever op, just do it, you might get lucky and make it!

    Cheers!

You have roadside assistance so just have that number with you. The only thing is parts of Texas and Arizona can be long stretches with not much in sight. Back in 2002 I drove my family from Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA to Barksdale AFB, La in a 1999 dodge caravan and didn't have any trouble.
If something does go wrong your warranty is good at any Toyota dealership and your Roadside assistance is available nationwide.
You will be fine, enjoy the trip.

    Toyota roadside assistance sucks ass!
It takes too long to respond (prob lowest bidder tow) and it only covers 25 miles to nearest dealer. Get AAA covers up to 100 miles

    Cheers!

Check out my thread. I towed 2600 lbs when the truck was 2 weeks old across country. I'm at 15k miles now and zero issues.

I'd never distance drive something I didn't have confidence in. For me, that's usually a high mile beater I've only owned a month or so and haven't finished base-lining the maintenance.

For $35 large, and new, it better inspire confidence.

If it doesn't, you need to sell the vehicle or just futz around town.

While it's good to know problems occur, and what they are so you can be aware, some folks obsess over what 'might be' instead of just dealing with it if something happens. This web site is one of those places that worry warts can get consumed with. Don't let coming here make you paranoid. It's a very minor representation of the whole population of trucks.
