Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
ground hawg tires were some of the worst ever on the street. Have yet to see them on a taco, i dont know if they even still make them.

^ first 10-15 minutes of any rainstorm after a period of no rain is the worst. But i would not use 4wd for that, its stopping and turning to worry about. 4wd is often used by people to make it easier to go, and creates a false sense of security. Yes it is great when you need it, but if its a mild slip situation where you only need 4wd to go faster, you should not be going faster anyway :) in most situations, sometimes (like pulling a trailer) it is nice to have to get going, but most of the time 2wd is better and safer.

4wd is great to have when you need it, and depending on you comfort level it may be "needed" sooner or later than the next guy with 4wd.. Just don't be the guy doing 85 in the snow storm because you can get up to that speed with 4wd, good luck stopping.

i have not had those tires, but there seems to be many people who agree with you on that

I really liked every set of BFG A/T tires i have run for all street and mild offroad driving

haha mud terrains on a jeep. GREAT winter plan

Having them siped would be a great idea!

I have treadwright gaurd dogs now and they are deffinately not a BFG A/T in the snow (on the street) but the are better than the BFG M/T (before km2) i had in the past.

As long as its not the procomp mud tires that were knock-off BFG M/T those were bad winter tires.

I totally agree with the first paragraph.

Haha! I guess you need to come to Canada and see people doing 110 km/h in a snow storm(highway is 100 km/h during ideal conditions). It's usually the guys in the huge ass trucks(girls in SUV's) too, some in small cars. A lot of people think because they have 4wd it gives them the right to drive like tools, no matter the road conditions. I just personally think that there is no reason to use 4wd in the rain, even if there is big puddles. Just saying. Snow is totally different.

    Just starting...
So, the difference between AWD and 4x4 is in the differential, right?

I can understand why you don't want to lock the differential on pavement. But with a limited slip differential (like the TRD Sport), how precisely is 4x4 different than AWD?

In addition to needing to use 4x4 at least 10 miles per month, I experienced some fishtailing with my 1st gen in the rain. It may have been due to the oil on the road and the infrequency of rain in SoCal. In any case, I found that 4-H was very handy in the rain.

During the most recent rain, I took the 2nd Gen out, in 4x4 to test it, but it did much better in 2WD than the 1st gen did.

4x4 has axle diffs front and rear and the locker on the offroad locks the rear diff. The transmission and transfer case are direct, without a diff in the center.

AWD will have front and rear diffs same as a 4x4 but will typically also have a center diff in the transmission that has some sort of bias either front or rear, or at least is not true lockup so there is less binding vs 4x4.

4x4 is perfectly safe to use on the street but tight turns and high speeds cause faster wear on them and potentially could cause failure.

The lsd mentioned is in the rear axel and if its mechanical either uses a sort of clutch or gears depnding on what type it is to limit the amout of spin you get as long as both tires have some traction. If one tire comes off the ground or has zero traction an lsd is basically useless and may even be damaged.

The newer tacoma s don't have a mechanical lsd rather they use the brakes and a computer to do the same thing.
