When a literal convoy of school buses comes to a railroad crossing; I don’t know what the laws are in other states, but I’d imagine they’re pretty similar...

In Pennsylvania, where I live, all bus drivers (not just of school buses) must turn on their hazards and open the entry door to listen for an oncoming train. This is understandable for safety reasons, but when you’ve got two, three, four, or even five school buses and you’re either running late for work or trying to get home from it can be anger-inducing (that’s the complex where I work up there on the right in the first picture; brick buildings with green roofs)...

    BCE3B6DB-C111-4B9C-AE80-262632F37677.jpg F2DF3BA5-8E90-46C8-8BF0-3D909A6BE73B.jpg

There should be an amendment to the law if there are multiple consecutive buses in a line, where they don’t have to stop and listen for a train! And then, school buses aren’t exactly fast off the line, so even just one bus it takes traffic forever to get going again!

    :annoyed:

Tanker trucks carrying hazardous and/or explosive materials must also turn on their hazards, stop, and listen for an oncoming train. What’s really funny is that in the direction I took the pictures from this morning, that’s a dead end train yard to my left, so they’re basically doing this for nothing; In the direction I’m coming from, it’s a bit more understandable, since the trains Are coming in from that direction.

One time, a school bus driver with an empty bus actually turned on the red flashers and extended the stop sign just to check for a train, and this obviously went over like a tax audit on Christmas Eve with the drivers stuck behind the bus. Lots of angry honks!

One time I encountered a situation that leads me to believe New Jersey does not have the same laws pertaining to school buses and railroad crossings. I was behind a car with Jersey plates, the woman driving it got visibly upset as she did not seem to understand why the bus was stopping for seemingly no reason. She throwing her hands up and just generally looked pissed...

You can also see another issue with this particular stretch of road; Note the Jeep Grand Cherokee on my left that seems to be crossing the yellow line to get into the center turn lane (they even have their blinker on). This one section brings out the absolute worst in people with the “I wanna be first” mentality.

    7668EA66-53D4-4E5A-854E-FB7B2FFD81BB.jpg

I always try to get into the center lane to make a left into work AFTER the train track, and the way this lane was intended to work was for people waiting to make a left on the other side of the track to get into the lane AFTER people on my side enter the center lane. I’ve lost count of how many people I’ve beeped at for trying to enter the center lane too early, and a good number of them get angry and beep back (the driver of that Jeep got back into their lane and then got into the center lane after I’d passed.

Another time I was in my boss’s Escalade after getting it washed, waiting to make a left turn into my work parking lot, and someone else in a much smaller vehicle cheated the cue and made a left turn from behind me!

This is one incident where I admit I was totally in the wrong, and I was on a section of the turnpike in New Jersey that I was unfamiliar with. Two lanes were becoming one and I was going a wee bit too fast. There was a red 2nd Gen Tundra in front of me and another vehicle behind me also going too fast. I was afraid of getting rear-ended and gunned it, getting past the Tundra with plenty of room to spare; The driver of the Tundra did not take too kindly to that, angrily beeping his horn and flipping me off. Nothing else became of that...

This is done for safety, simple as that. My brother works for the railroad and I have changed my thinking on train safety. Trains don't stop on a dime, so drivers need to use extra caution. Buss's don't stop fast or accelerate fast either.

I leave early for work. That way I'm there, BS'n and drinking coffee with 20 min to spare.

Okay.... is it just me? Or is this something everyone sees? Busy freeway, left lane, going fast enough to pass everyone in the right lanes, and some guy climbs your ass until you can't see his windshield. You know he's there, you saw him coming and you're looking for a way to get out of his way, but he wants to make love to your bumper with his truck. And it's always a lifted diesel, usually a newer Ford.

AND... as you finally get an opening to merge into the lane to your right the guy acclerates and comes damn close to clipping your left rear.

Of course at least half the time this happens you end up passing the guy within a short stretch because he's exiting and gets caught in traffic.

When I was in elementary school down in Georgia, our bus driver almost got us killed by a train. She didn't wait for traffic to clear on the other side of the track and got stuck behind a couple cars at the stop sign beyond the non-gated rr crossing. The car infront of the bus saw what was about to happen and drove into someone's yard just quick enough for the bus to get past the track. Bus driver no longer had a job at the end of the day.

So lucky. The amount of gate's that fail might surprise you as well. My brother tells me it happens all the time.

Some Asshat in a Honda Minivan did that to me yesterday, was in the fast lane with a bunch of traffic in front of me so l could not go any faster and the slow lane was full. This clown not only was right up on my bumper but also a couple feet over the left painted line too.

I've always wondered why trains felt the need to blast their horns when the gate and bells make enough racket as is, but I suppose this is why...they don't know if the gate may have failed or not and its better to blast the horn just in case, to let people know you're a'comin

If someone climbs your bumper just slow down to the speed limit. You know the thing many folks exceed. They will eventually have a melt down and go around you. If they do hit you it’s all on them. They will usually try to cut you off but what can you do.

I’m thinking about getting a sticker that says “smile for the jury”
