I would like to. I haven’t really looked into how much trouble it will be.

Making smooth shifts takes some conscious effort and practice. Use your ears and your feet to get the right combination for upshifts and downshifting, and after a while you will be good to go in any manual vehicle or bike or piece of machinery.

Double clutching, once to leave a gear, then adjust the engine rpms, and then clutch a second time to enter and mesh with the new gear, makes it all smoother and was necessary in non-synchromesh transmissions. It's all a good challenge, and fun to get it really perfect every time.

I wish my Taco was MT, cause I enjoy driving MT, but they are difficult to find on Maui since Servco the Hawaii distributor doesn't usually order them for stock.

In 1st, accelerate up to around 4k.
Foot off the gas, then depress the clutch fully.
Now your shift should be two parts, not a single motion from 1 to 2, but two separate steps: Out of 1st, and then into 2nd. "click, click". Then release the clutch as you're adding a tiny bit of gas.

You'll need to *feel* for the clutch release, you can't just let it out all in one go or it'll be jerky.

Mostly it just takes practice. See if you can find an empty parking lot (office parks and community colleges on weekends are usually empty) and practice.

    But it's a racecar.

And shifting at higher rpms keeps the engine in the powerband so you have that 2nd gear acceleration.

and trucks have big displacement motors so they can lug along at low rpm. so, now what to do?

    Minimum 4.0 liters, apparently.

That's where the stump pulling starts.

    I heard that on here.

Dodge 225 slant 6 (3.68 liters) and a compound low 4 speed pulled plenty of stumps back in the day.

That was actually a fairly fuel thrifty package back in the day.
Be a nice ride to fix up and cruise around with, they aren't around too much any more.

IIRC, it had the 1bbl "miser" carb setup. Well, until my father decided he wanted to make "Warlock" out of it a few years down the road.
383 big block, 727TF and rear axle were taken from a Chysler Newport donor, and shoehorned in there with a set of glass packs. Good job it was only a 2bbl.

I bought a 2bbl intake for the /6 and a used Weber DGEV carb... but never installed them.

1978-79 Super Six package was the highest performing slant six. Factory aluminum intake and the best stock cam without too invasive of an emissions package. A mid size car with the Super Six engine, 2.94 axle running a 14" tire was both a snappy and thrifty performer.
Cars were a lot more fun back then.
