The only way the front would move at the same speed was if it had a locker on it and it was locked.

you are both wrong.put your truck in 4 wheel drive and see what happens when you go around a tight turn.locking differential refers to the rear end because it has a differential the front does not.

You can lock both diff's if you put lockers in both of them. Taco's don't come with the option of a front factory locker. It won't bind because it's a open diff and doesn't have the rear connected to bind anything.

There is most assuredly a differential in the front end. The locking differential, for those that have one, refers to the rear end because the rear diff w/ the e-locker can be mechanically locked, bypassing the differential part. The front has an "open" diff that allows the opposing front tires to spin at different speeds. Check the FSM. Better yet, get all 4 wheels off the ground (or just the front of your truck for those without a rear driveshaft), put the t-case in 4WD but the transmission in neutral. Spin one front tire and watch for the opposing front tire to spin the other way. Nothing like getting hands dirty to learn something.

The difference between 4WD and AWD is the transfer case does not have a differential. It can't let the front and rear vary their rate of speed.

Its called the Toyota clamshell differential, you can google search and see pictures of it. Don't sweat being wrong. :)

But in the case of the OP, with no rear driveshaft attached, the part-timey-ness of the transfer case won't enter into it. His front end will drive fine (but a bit like a dog dragging his ass on the carpet.)

    929,

I'm sorry for not explaining why you were wrong. I was on my phone and couldn't type it all out. I figured other members would graciously step in and explain, as they did.

As stated, our truck do have a differential in the front. It's the foundation of most drivelines. You can find out more info about how they work by watching this video:

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct...=hCOciXmzlWmcEF5KXVsbdQ&bvm=bv.99804247,d.cWw

The Tacoma doesn't come stock with a front diff locker. So both front wheels are free to spin at different speeds. However, the transfer case forcing at least one wheel in the rear and one wheel in the front to spin at the same speed. This is why you get binding in 4WD on dry pavement. If the rear driveshaft is removed, as in the OP's case, you don't have this issue and are free to drive around like a FWD car.
