I know its a old thread but some friends of mine drove a hand me down ‘86 Toyota for thousands of miles and over several years to and from work with just the front shaft intact. It was passed along between many different owners at work and did fine.

I need to find a scanned copy of that. I know my prerunner was 2wd but if I'm converting to 4wd, and adding the factory locker, I want to make sure I have all of those notices on hand. Better safe then lawsuit.

I actually removed the E-Locker sticker from the door and put it on the back of the 4wd piece above the visor when i first got the truck

Thats cool, as long as you have it somewhere so you can point them out if you ever have a need to sell.

It broke off about 6 years prior being used as a archaeological company field truck loaded to the hilt with gear. The company gave it to one of the employees and they’ve been passing it around to whoever needed it afterwards. It became kind of a running joke.

I had a freind that did this for 2 weeks on 285's and front diff has making noise ever since. Drive easy it should be fine. You see the size difference in diffs.

It's your vehicle, who's going to sue you?

If I have to sell I want to make sure my ass is covered when they decide to grenade anything.

I had a talk with 2 people who asked "why can't I engage the locker at highway speeds" and "why do I have to be at a stand still to engage 4wd/hi/lo" and it just BLEW MY MIND. Its because of this that no one will be touching my truck unless I sell.

Used vehicles, especially old highly modified ones from a private party are sold "as is" with no expectation of warranty or anything like that. There is no legal paperwork except transfer of title when you sell a vehicle.

Even in Kalifornistan you're not going to get sued (successfully) because you didn't provide the new owner with a factory 4x4 sun visor and they go and grenade it.

Its a hassle I would rather not deal with, seriously. I don't want to be out on legal fee's just because someone wanted to use the government system

Seriously, the ONLY case someone might have is if you purposefully lied to them when selling it, and offered them some kind of "warranty" based on that lie. Like you telling them (in writing) they could jam it in 4lo at 75mph, and then they go and grenade their T-case.

The legal system is well versed in the "neither one of you (buyer and seller) are assumed to be car experts", so there is very little expectation for full disclosure, legal requirements, etc...

The best solution, though, is just not to sell it. :D

Well, successfully have driven almost a thousand miles as a FWD taco. The only thing that seems off is that the front drive shafts are supposedly not as well balanced (so I've read??) And that makes it vibrate a little at certain speeds. It also kept getting quite hot to the touch, so I just regressed the u joints with each tank of gas for safety and to make myself feel better about the misuse. I'll have my one piece DC shaft from Toms on Friday.

Drove mine around in FWD for few days. Perfectly fine.
