I hadn’t really thought about the access to the taillights I suppose.

I’m expecting a de-pin, possibly extend, feed through a grommet with liquid electrical tape as a sealer, and splice/tap accordingly

Any reason you're opposed to using the trailer plug?

I've got one. It's just a bulky look is all. It's nice for testing though since I don't have to roll around on the ground.

Looks like the 090II unsealed 6 pin (same as the head unit rear speakers). I am not sure I'm reading that part number correctly but looks like 90980-12349.

Yes that is the part number, you can see it in full resolution. Keep in mind that it's for the turn/tail/brake lights. The reverse light bulb is the smaller 2-pin plug at the bottom.

In your 4Runner, where does the red wire (BU) hide into, the taillight assembly or the harness?

Yeah the bulb looks like standard T10 socket. Per Caribe’s posts above I think the easy plan would T off the 6 pin to steal ground and reverse.

EDIT: I guess BU is the cool acronym? :)

I'll need to look again but you might be right. It may daisy-chain off of the 6-pin plug rather than run out its own lead.

There are more than one type of rear lamp assemblies for 4runner...
Meter it with transmission in reverse.

Main reason is I tow occasionally and prefer doing things the hard way meticulously.

But if you tow, you'll have to remove this thingy anyway right?

Did you find one, we have a 2021 4runner Pro if you still need a tester.

I do. @mynameistory did some leg work on this, but we weren’t sure about getting the wire out of the interior down to the hitch. Any ideas there?

I would have to look at it later on. from where in interior are you looking at, any pics or drawings would help to determine.
