I never thought I would do this, but I just dropped Prime. Some folks might still love it, but I am happy I was able to detach from it and discover alternatives.

    My reasoning:
    • The slow march toward “Amababa” - infestation with cheap Chinese knockoff products
    • Their spurious definition of “two day” shipping (YMMV)
    • Prime video basically just becoming ad-riddled Freevee now, which you can watch separately for free.
    • $125/yr is more expensive than alternatives
    • Routinely selling fraudulently returned, used products such as batteries as new (yes, even when they are the official seller)
    • Damaged items
    • Interactions with their slimy nickel and dimey AWS salespeople in my professional role (count me in the Azure camp)
    • Their pervasive culture of trickery to minimize the real value they provide while still making it appear like they offer value
If anyone else wants to join the Cult of the Bezosless, Walmart+ is cheaper, delivers faster (in my area, at least), and includes Paramount streaming access. Kroger also offers a subscription service that works very well.

The real question: which is more evil, them or Walmart?

both? I’d literally rather just go to a store and support the employees there; and the local economy… it’s strange days.

I’ve wanted to do this for years, especially once I graduated in 2018 and no longer got it for half price as a student. I’m going to cancel it this year and see how it goes. I never use the prime video or anything, I pretty much only use it for shipping but I don’t buy that much from Amazon anymore anyways. Occasionally I do but I think I can handle the slower shipping in those cases, if not I’ll pay a bit extra on a case by case.

Yeah, it really isn’t a big deal to drop because you can still order stuff if they’re the only option.

Yeah, if you have credit debt that’s a good course of action. Minimize recurring expenses and try to get that payed off as quickly as you can. I wish you the best with this!

    I have to agree.

Prime TV app has gotten way too unfriendly to navigate anymore, and their customer service is flat out atrocious.

I filed for a refund because they delivered to the wrong address. They denied it on the reasoning that "it's probably at your neighbors house, you need to contact them to retrieve it." No the fuck I do not need to do that. I wound up filing a dispute with my credit card instead... all for a 5 dollar purchase.

Edit: PS - I just went to my account settings to look. Its set to renew this year for $140. Yeah, no. no. I think I'll just cancel that now. I also find it hilarious that they don't even bother putting in the "why? please come back" screen when you go to cancel. Instead I got a very simple email that said "your subscription will expire in November. Click this button when you decide to come back." Somehow, that's worse. I cant tell you why that's worse, but somehow it is.

This echoes my own various experiences. It’s just not worth it anymore. The value they offer has declined, the price is higher, and there are more alternatives.

How long until there's a "Reactivation Fee" like cable/phone providers would tack on to flick a switch...

This happened to me during my one month membership trial period, and I don't feel like I want to go from house to house in the neighborhood to search for the mistake that Amazon Prime created to me down the road, I CANCELLED IT IMMEDIATELY!
