On that note, I think one of the best aspects is that crossfit recognizes over most other gym mindsets is the concept of diet. Exercise all you want, but then to go home and stuff your face isn't gonna help you.

I wish I was smart enough to come up with the concept of Planet Fitness...

I applaud those people that at least get up and go to the gym, but between the "lunk alarm" or whatever and cupcakes and stuff at the front desk...man.

Reading your posts there are SO many similarities to what was going through my mind a few short years ago. I too thought I could do cardio, lift weights and change my habits to get healthy. I did. For a short period. Multiple times.

When you get older you will find that the same routine not only pays lower dividends but also gets monotonous and boring. I would make small improvements only to end up worse than where I was. It may not be Crossfit but I can tell you that Crossfit is for a LOT more people than most believe. It's not only a continually varying workout that will kick your ass (in a good way) each and every day but it's also an undercover support group for the important support aspects you'll need on a weight loss and overall health journey. I know w/o a shadow of a doubt I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for Crossfit.

So yeah, I hear all of the cult jokes and how dangerous it is and blah blah blah... it's one of the single most important things I personally have ever done in my life. Period. Full stop. Whenever I hear someone with a similar story to where I was four or so years ago I can't help but offer it up because I know if they give it a chance and stick with it that there's a better than 90% chance they too will be substantially healthier with a better long-term outlook on staying that way and the data supports it. As for diet, keto, paleo, intermittent fasting, etc. you can also couple any one or none of this with Crossfit. That's the beauty of it is you can also stack whatever works for you for best results in terms of diet and eating schedule.

I used to be one of the meat head ex-athletes that made fun of Crossfit before I tried it or knew what it was actually about. Turns out, when I opened my mind to something new, it fit the exact hold that had been missing in my life for some many years: a sense of community and togetherness with a healthy lifestyle at it's core. I used to get this competitive yet communal feeling from sports. Once you hit a certain age and it's pretty clear you'll never turn pro you start to look for that (whether you know it or not) and need to find it to motivate you to change aspects in your life that will add up to better health. Now I look forward to the workouts every day and the healthy aspect is really just icing on the cake. If you can get to an overall lifestyle change like that that is sustainable (key word) you will be healthy for life.

I can appreciate that opinion but at LOT of Crossfit revolves around the box that you go to. In your case, 15-30 students per class with a single coach is a HORRID ratio. I don't know how else to put that so I won't try to sugar coat it. Most will have classes up to a dozen max for a single coach with the majority being in that 5:1 ratio or less. I often times drop-in to boxes with 3-5 people per class. If I was going to a place with 30 people and a single coach... well, I wouldn't be going there anymore. I too have been injured and I see injuries but that's also the nature of being active. Anything you do active has the implied risk of injury and that's just the nature of the game. You can do things to limit your exposure to potential injury in anything. What isn't discussed often is the unseen "injury" from people who are inactive. It may not be acute like a sprained knee but instead a much more series issue like heart disease. Personally, I will take some soreness over death. I know that's taking it to an extreme but I'm intentionally doing so to make a point. I digress. I really wish there were more requirements of Crossfit boxes and how they run things. Most owners will say there's already too much but from someone who has seen some pretty shady shit go down I would prefer there be more control than less. I have friends who live in an un-populated area in another state and they all hate Crossfit after having actually tried it. When I ask for detail as to why the things they tell me are apalling and shouldn't ever be someone's experience of how Crossfit is. That sad part is it's the only show in town so the sad part is they get away with it because there's no competition to force them to be better and give people another option. Instead, most just get a bad opinion of how Crossfit is and never go back. I guess my point is if you have the ability to go to another box it's important that you select the best for you. Personally, I wouldn't go to a box that had class sizes of 30 with a single coach and I'm not someone who requires hand-holding since I consider myself quite proficient in most of what we do yet it's rare that I go through an entire class w/o a coach mentioning something to me that helps that I wouldn't have noticed on my own.

Summary: I think we can both agree that 30 people in a Crossfit class to one coach is a poor ratio & even half of that number may be too much.

So I can't bring it up in a thread in a fitness section about dropping weight and improving overall health when I personally have used it to do exactly that after trying many other things? Personally I find the joke that Crossfitters always talk about Crossfit to be a little bit played out and if it can't be brought up even in this context that kind of proves it.

Man, I can't tell you how many times I saw someone hit a hard workout at the gym (lifting and cardio stuff back when I did that) and then saw them getting Starbucks or similar because they "earned" it even though they worked off maybe 300 calories and then "rewarded" themselves with over 1,000 calories in BS that same day and wondered why they didn't get anywhere. I know that "calories in and calories out" is an over simplification but for probably 99% of the population it applies and is something they don't understand. It's a helluva starting point for anyone and everyone out there.

Jeez man, I was just trying to crack a little joke. I agree that Crossfit might be a good solution for OP if he finds it's his thing. Honestly, if i didn't mind another monthly expense, I'd probably have joined a box already myself.

I fully understand you are happy with crossfit and I'm not trying to change your mind and I still believe crossfit is good for most people.. but I have been a member at more then one box and only one of them had a digital sign in online limiting classes to 12. The city I use to live in had 6 boxes within a 5 SQ mile radius and 2 on the same street... I do agree 30 is way to many but unless the owner is willing to pay for coaches it doesn't always happen the way we want it.

Right. Never been a gym member before but thought this was a strange place. OK, not just me.
It is clean though and cheap. I don't use the 'upper' services of massage and tanning.
    Machines are in good shape.

I did Crossfit. Realized it was a cult. Learned how to do Olympic lifts and quit. The end.

That's actually not bad pricing for a gym. And as an accountant: under the threshold of what people will take steps to cancel if they don't go to relatively often. So the company is making $170 / year off of some people for 0 services rendered.

Your primary issue with Crossfit seems to be from mismanagement at a few locations and not Crossfit as a whole. A more of an exception than the rule based on my experience. Where we live we've been members at five different boxes (there's over a dozen) and only one had no requirement to sign-up in advance for a class and they're classes were regularly between 2-7 people so no real danger of too many people attending. It sounds like your primary issue w/Crossfit could be easily resolved by class caps which is a management decision rather than how Crossfit does things. In that case, if fewer people went the owner would have to take the reason their membership #'s were in decline serious and either cap classes or bring on more coaches. As for hiring, that's not necessarily a requirement as many of the boxes around us to volunteer coaches largely with free membership being a reward for X amount of classes coached in a month. It just seems like they lucked into a positive position in the whole supply v demand situation where their mismanagement doesn't seem to matter much like the one I mentioned earlier.

Some great info in here. I personally have been doing the low carb/high fat "keto diet" past 6.5 months. Gone from 241 to 196. size 38-36 to 32

I can honestly say I've never felt better. More alert, focused, less joint pain, better sleep, oh and as a bonus I've lost 45 lbs.

What ever "diet"/Work out program you choose. The most important part of how you feel is what are you putting into your body. That means the food... There is a direct correlation of eating poorly and not feeling well, sleeping well, inflammation, etc.

We wouldn't expect our trucks to run on transmission fluid would we? No, of course not! Same thing goes for the body!

    Good Luck OP!
