I use 4hi in the rain now and then especially if I need quick acceleration, like making a left hand turn across many lanes of traffic on a business intersection, try not to use 4wd on right turns (tighter radius). Or in the mountain passes continuously when the road is switching from dry, wet, ice, snow. Thousands of miles and never had a problem.

If you look at what some people do with their trucks and jeeps, occasional use of 4hi on dry pavement on mostly straight roads is going to be no big deal.

What about kinda sharp turns on sand, as in pulling or backing into a parking spot on the beach. It tends to get crowded on the holidays.

Done it for years in my 2000 Jeep and never had a problem, but a Tacoma aint a old Jeep.

I use 4H lots in the winter, trucks and ice suck, 4h helps in a lot of situations.
With winter tires almost as good as my Subaru.

I pulled up to college today and got out of my truck to see a Tacoma owner a few spots away. He jumped out of his truck and was like "Hey man! Nice truck! Crazy rain we're getting, had to use 4wd on the way here."

Question - I know you can engage 4H while moving and 4L while stopped. Can you engage 4H while slipping/spinning the rear tires though? Or will that cause damage

That’s what I assumed but I can’t figure out why. Unless it’s just because the front tires would be moving slower than the rears.

4x4 on the free way? Send it!
I personally believe 4x4 isn’t need for about 80% of the places most Tacoma owners drive but I understand having that assurance and understand wanting to test it out. It’s also good to throw it in 4x4 to oil all the gears and what not, although I recommend off road conditions.

And for the 4x4ers in the rain. 4x4 won’t stop you from hydroplaning even alittle bit, has to do with depth of water, tire size and type of tire. The weight of the 4x4 in the truck helps but that’s there wether it’s on or off.

This would be my guess. The owner's manual specifically says don't try to engage 4wd when the tires are slipping, so I assume that means damage may occur if you do.

4lo wouldn't give you enough clearance to get out of that--need 4 super hi---or 4-pul

It looks to me like he added WAY too much blinker fluid.
