I'd recommend a thorough cleaning of the battery posts

My work buddies passed around an old front wheel drive only Toyota pickup commuter for several years, it had over 300k miles on it and was always in 4H or it wouldnt go anywhere.

That's exactly why. You want to mesh the gears, not slam them into each other going different speeds. It's the same difference between standing behind someone pushing them on a swing, vs jumping into the path of the swing on the way back. Might be able to get away without a trip to the dealer/hospital, might not.

For the highway 4wd, I think some people are confusing 4wd with diff locks. Please do not engage your diff locks and 4wd anytime you have good traction then decide to start making turns... Or do, then tag me in your new TW thread complaining that the dealer won't honor their warranty.

i'm so fed up with morons.

seriously use common fucking sense people.

if it's dry, don't use 4wd. if you accidentally leave it on, you'll know it when you turn. the harder and faster you turn in the dry with 4wd the more likely you will cause damage. if you're driving straight, all wheels are driving at the same speed therefore there is no damage occurring to the TC.

you can use 4wd in any condition other than dry roads without issue or worry about damage to the transfer case.

you can engage 4wd up to 55ish (some say 62). Once in 4wd, you can drive up to any speed you wish without damage.

if you still have questions, watch some youtube videos on how a transfer case and differential work.

The reason you don’t want to drive it 4wd with good traction is the front and rear driveshafts are locked together at the transfer case. If the driveshafts are both turning the same speed everything is ok. If they are not turning the same speed like when turning a corner something has to give. If your on a loose surface this will be a tire slipping. If your on a high traction surface what gives could be anything from the transfer case to the tires slipping, it just depends on what the weakest point is.

AWD systems don’t have a transfer case they have a center differential so the drive shafts are not lock together.

Don't worry about it. My wife drove from Idaho to CA in 4wheel drive and complained about how crappy her gas mileage was to me in her truck. 125K miles later, still no problems.

Thank God transfer case gears usually aren't made of copper or aluminum...

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatigue_limit

Read up on that, then keep a straight face saying that any highway use will eventually destroy your truck no matter how little you turn.

TLDR: Highway use is fine. Tight turns is not. No highway that I know has tight turns on it.

A left turn at an intersection is generally a longer, shallower turn when compared to a right turn from an intersection.

Yup, it was a beater and they passed it around for free to whoever needed a commute vehicle at the time.

It lasted for years that way!

I think people are confusing using front and rear differential lockers and what using 4x4 does...

Here a good quick video on the subject.
