Hi, I jumped under my truck today go do my rear shocks and noticed that a liquidy gunk (presumably brake fluid) was slung all over the inside of my wheel. It is only one one or the four wheels (back passenger) and my break fluid is at the right level. Can anyone tell me whats going on? Im not sure at all.
    Thank you.

Are you sure it's not gear oil? When the rear axle seal goes bad it lets gear oil splash all over the inside of the wheels, not uncommon to happen on these trucks.

Especially since your brake fluid isn't low, I would imagine it's a bad rear axle seal

If it smells like the rear end of a goat its gear oil.

Sounds like one of your axle seals blew out; The same thing happened to my truck, though it was caught before it got that messy...

Did you pull the drum? Could it be the rear brake cylinder.

If it does turn out to be your axle seal, here's a write-up you can print out to keep next to you while you do the job. Also has all the part numbers and tools you'll need.

If it turns out to be the brakes, and you have to replace the shoes, here's a step-by-step for that...

    OME and worth every penny.
Pull out the ABS sensor and see if it's wet on the ABS wheel, also check the rear end breather and see if it's froze closed. If so, yes you blew a seal.

So the rear end of a Goat smells like gear oil .

I gotta wonder what the poor goat has been fed .

Brake Fluid smells far worse to me then gear oil

    LOL

That thread reminds me, one time about a year ago I accidentally got some used gear oil in our trash bin outside when I was trying to pour it into a bottle to take it to Pep Boys for disposal. That night I was up for hours trying to figure out where the 'gas leak' was coming from in our kitchen, thinking we were going to die from an explosion or poisoning in our sleep any minute. Then I finally followed the smell to the kitchen window...which looked out over our driveway...right to where the open trash bin was lol. Gear oil effin reeks.

Sorry about the thread jack OP

Strange that it's so ill refined they don't even brew out the sulfur.

Enough to make you want to use synthetic just to never have it on your clothes. Only one way to remove it, scissors.

I don`t mind the smell I like being able to smell if I have a leak.

So many things get ruined because no smells things leaking and thinks it is something they slopped through dripping off
