I just swapped out my new drums and shoes on my 03 Tacoma. This is the second set because the chatter was so bad on the first set. Well the chatter is still there. Could the second set be out of round also? Seriously?
Did the parking brake check and its definitely the back.

never have had luck with duralast, I replaced mine with some raybestos shoes and they are quiet and stop on a dime. I did replace the hardware and shoes and have the original drums.

So it might be possible that the drums are out of round again?

I've heard people say that the duralast drums aren't round to begin with. try getting them resurfaced, also if your hardware kit is worn out it could cause an issue although probably not. since rear brakes last so long anytime I change them I do new shoes, hardware kit, and brake cylinders

Duralast blows....mine were out of round off the shelf. Take them f#ckers back and get something else. Pads suck too.. at least from my experience

I bought a cheap set of drums (Centric or something). They were out of round right out of the box. I had to have them machined which cost almost as much as the drums themselves. I have never had a problem with cheap drums, but I will never buy them again.

I have bad luck with pretty much everything. Last time I bought tires 2 were even out of round. There is a shop near me that will true the tires.....kinda sucks to do that to new tires but they will ride smooth.

I just did the rears on my 04 with all new Raybestos parts from Rock Auto... Drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, and hardware kit... They actually work now and very quiet so far, less that 100 miles on them.

Did you make sure that the mating surface of the axle flange was TOTALLY free of any rust or debris? That's often the culprit. It's a pain in the ass to clean them up but necessary.

And I use only OEM linings and high quality rotors/drums. Brembo this time and they're great so far.

I'm running raybestos on oem drums and work great as well. The key is making sure you buy good parts and change out all the hardware when doing shoes. They last around 100k miles. The old parts see a lot of heat and debris over time and are old. Also changing the cylinders is a good idea. If they are sticking then you won't have even pressure and cause issues too

the auto adjuster / bellcrank assembly is hyper critical to the performance of Tacoma rear drums... if it is not adjusted properly every time you pull the parking brake cable the auto adjuster is going to try and adjust the rear shoes... it will do this until the point where there is zero clearance between the shoe and drum and you are running around with the parking brake applied all the time, even if you have 10 clicks on the pull brake. Lift the rear end and try to rotate a tire, there should be a a small amount of free wheeling before the axle/spider gears prevent you from turing it more... if you cant spin it freely, even a few degrees this is the issue.
