LOL... no debate required... I agree with your observation since I didn't explain the parameters. Clarification was intentionally absent, since long winded posts about legal issues are quite frankly, boring.

It's illegal in the state of PA to cause harm to yourself. Who knew? Doesn't matter where you do it, or whether you were doing it by accident or did it intentionally, sober or impaired.

The private property venue however, does require a complainant... much like Chris became when he called and said... "Hey, some drunken fool just damaged my property and I need / want an officer to respond." That is the key. This establishes probable cause for law enforcement to respond. Further, knowing that the person Chris called about was impaired, and could obviously harm himself or others if left unattended, mandates police response.

So, as you noted without a complainant, the police, not having probable cause to investigate or due process, (such as a warrant), could not without more come onto your private property.

Now, have a neighbor or passerby, or say, Chris, call with the harmful event report and we have a different story. Preservation of life, as long as the elements of the incident are present overtake the issue of private property.

Think of it this way... police are called to a disturbance at a neighboring home. Some type of domestic. The report suggests a harmful event is occurring, sounds of a physical altercation, life taking threats during a heated argument, impact sounds, gun shot... you get the picture.

A patrol arrives and sees something to support the call... broken door, window, active conduct that endangers another. Lets make it easy and say the drunken husband finds out she's a leavin' his worthless a$$ which causes him to threaten harm to himself. No different that driving drunk in his pool.

So, he's in his own house... on private property... endangering himself or others. A duty to preserve his life exists, even if he's engaged in something intentionally to end it. No warrant required to intervene.

I suspect further detail isn't needed... as long as the application of probable cause is understood. Oh, and shooting at the police for being on private property just cuz, is more likely end in a "Suicide by Cop" event.
