I think I will keep my stock y-pipes for now. I will update later if I have the raspyness.

Ok just too clarify... The URD or Pipebomb are only loud and raspy with DTLT Headers. They both work great with stock manifold or JBA shorties: IMO...

    Lots baby!
The shorty headers are actually JBA. I have a set and the midrange is much better than stock. The DTLT have better performance on the upper end.

I am pretty sure there are JBA shortie headers and Doug Thorley shorties. Check out the Dyno chart above for the long tubes, there are gains in power and torque throughout rpm range. Anyone have a dyno chart of DT shorties to compare the gains?

I have a friend who is running the pipe bomb with a catback, stock headers and it sounds really nice. His next upgrade was supposed to be the dtlh.....and seeing what I am going thru, he decided to get some shorties.

There are also DT Shorties.... The diff is Long Tubes which eliminate the Cats, and shorties which are welded to the Cats...

    Dont be confused,,,

I think this is a dyno for the DT shorties on a 4.0L :

Alright, WTF I have called 5 different shops and none of them will take the cat off and install my long tube headers. They say it is a federal law not to remove any emission parts on a 1996 & newer car. They also said I will fail the yearly required state inspection. Is this true??

I thought about that, but if I won't pass a state inspection than I will return long tubes and get the shorties. :( It is hit and miss with the long tube emmissions test.

You will only fail if your state requires a sniffer test. How ever, I have heard of some folks passing with the DTLT's and stock Y-pipe. Loosing 2 of the 4 Cats should still be somewhat in the realm of emissions legal,

The O2 sensor will allow you to past the OBDII test by eliminating the CEL...

They do have a sniffer test in Texas. And they are supposed to visually inspect too. A lifted truck is a lot easier to check than most cars. URD is great so far and will let me return for shorties if I need to. Now I have two brands to choose from DT or JBA shorties???? :notsure:

He did this write up on the DT shorty install, if you are able to do this, your install will run just about $50ish for welding, you do the removing and install:D

    DT shortie headers
I live in Texas and I like to stay emission legal. I also like to keep the O2 sensors so my fuel economy won't suffer. Here is my DT shortie headers.

    1. I created a form that supported the old manifold using plywood. Make sure the manifold is bolted down securely. You want to make sure the bolt holes in the new header lined up well.

    2. I then cut the manifold at the weld line before the converter using an electric cut-off tool or hacksaw.

    3. I then removed the old manifold from the plywood and bolted on the shortie headers to the plywood.

    4. I then had the local muffler shop weld the header for me. DSC01350_e76a4ee245785f12c950f6490d835bf329c7e8ba.jpgDSC01361_7fa7868e431d0bfb0f8cd4bf34b72edbff64ff0f.jpg

On a side note, comparing these pics to my JBA's sitting in the garage, I have to say Doug Thorley's look of higher quality. By far:cool:

Nice find^^^^^. I have my long tubes in my garage now but I am still researching the differences vs the shorties. I talked to a guy locally that said when he put on the DT long tubes, he could feel the low end power loss vs stock setup! I offroad and daily drive only, I am beginning to think the long tubes benefit street racers and x-runner guys the most.

IMHO, I would go Long tubes. The shorties are too much hassle as far as install goes. You will not notice the low end loss unless you have a superior AIS Dyno...

Plus, I hope everyone is aware that HP is not a limiting factor when it comes to off roading... That is a Gear & traction issue.

As far as daily driver, just don't be heavy on the far right pedal, unless you want to appreciate them upper RPM gains:D

You had shorties and then upgraded to long tubes. What gains and losses did you notice?

No losses, just alot stronger above 3000rpm. Mine is a 6 spd, so remember, if need be I can launch out harder... But at no time did it prevent me from taking off in normal rpm range.

i'm also having a hard time figuring out which header i want to get, short or long tube. I think i'm going to go for the shorty since i really never ger above 3000 RPM anyways cuz i like my gas mileage haha. And i'm looking for more low to mid range gain not high end and i have heard a lot of guys say they lost some low end power with the LT and on a 4 banger i don't need to be losing any power haha

Ok i have a question. I keep on reading that the shorties will give you better power in the low rpm range. And the longtubes will give you better power in the 3000+ rpm range. But wont either one be better then stock in every way?
