What are your thoughts on having dual shocks? I was looking to replace my lower arms and saw that there are some manufacturers that sell an optional dual shock lower arm, why would you need a dual shock? I could see a Prelander using them but how about an Overlander?

It’s one of those things that there is no need if you have to ask.

It's for trucks that are jumped (think trophy/baja).
Or for people with unlimited budgets and a supreme desire for clout.

Seems like overkill for an overlander. Unless you’re hitting large whoops at speed and thrashing it through Baja.

It's way overkill for almost everyone and 8d imagine it'd ride pretty tough over the smaller stuff at slower speeds like typical truck sees.

Having had it on both it all comes down to how you use the truck and need extra compression and rebound assistance. Most people do not need it. I have had it on my MT and LT setups and I could get away without it. I can get spirited and with extra weight and driving its a nice to have but no way is it NEEDED. I first jumped in on my MT when a deal came up.

Thing to consider if you decide to do it:
    • Added Cost
    • What benefit are you solving (all for the bling is fine too)
    • Welding on shock hoops
    • revalving your current shocks (you will want to let the bypasses do the heavy lifting)

100% if you valve it for speed and big hits it is a rougher ride on low speed stuff.

Adding bypass shocks allow to externally fine tune valvling and have valving zones to them, usually 2-3 compression zones and 1 rebound. Could be useful for desert/higher speed overlanding (but I guess you were considering that as Pre-Landing) so if you're only going slow then theres likely no need. The front having a bump zone would possibly be the most useful for a heavy rig to soften bottom out situations if you come into something unexpected and faster than a normal shock can absorb adequately.

This is it. Dude, those maintenance intervals get a little funny on the wallet. Cheers!

haha indeed if you are already running upper and lower you may be half way there anyway but it does increase overall maintain cost.

If you are not then thats another thing. Unless you are running icons you will need new stock length or LT kit to run bypass shocks up front. for Standard that is another $2k. For the not so DYI adding bypasses can run $3-$k (Lowers $2k, Shocks $1kish, Labor, Re-valving whatever that is). Some companies like Filthy and Accutune can soften initial valving if your starting from scratch.

The term Overlander is so overused and played out; marketing gimmick really.

But what the heck is a Prelander?

    What are you saying? o_O

Seriously it is, but it is now a part of the industry. Running a Overland group and doing route planning it is abundantly clear that we are never really overlanding (ie Crossing the Sahara/Outback or Serengeti). It is all we have to define what we do though. Dual shocks are not necessary unless you are competing in baja. People also need to stop calling their trips Expeditions.
