Instead of running wires and adding things, could you remove the power supply under the hvac controls and just swap that receptacle out for the dual usb one like in the OP? I'm no wire wizard, just a thought of mine. I would like to do that since I don't use it for anything else and there is 2 of them.

 

Since there are members here chiming in that have knowledge in wiring, I'd like to ask a question. I already did the lighted glove box mod and used a add a fuse for it. I used the 15A PWR OUTLET spot. Would it be safe to tap into that wire (running to the glove box) to power the new USB outlet or should I use a different power source? My concern is filling up my fuse box with add a fuses.

 

Which power supply are you talking about, the 100v one?

I suppose that's it. Just one of the power points under the a.c. controls. I normally plug the usb adapter into it so I can charge my phone. There are 2 of them and wouldn't mind converting one to a fixed usb port

 

I think you'll be safe for just a USB charger. The biggest I've seen are 2A so those aren't a big concern.

Oh your talking about the cigaret outlets. Yeah, tapping into those isn't going to hurt. I'd still run them independently if your going through that much work of taking your dash apart.

 

I have the parts for the setup I posted above. I can build it for anyone who wants it.

 

All of the fuse slots are 12v, and amps are decided by what you are powering. If you use a fuse tap(aka:add a fuse, etc), then use the same fuse that you removed in the circuit, for THAT circuit. The other fuse size will depend on what you add. For a 3 amp rated charger you need to use the next size up fuse. So a 5 amp is needed, and yes I know you can get a 3 but 5 is the common size that will come in any bulk fuse pack. A 5 will protect your circuit from either a spike, or short. If any one needs pics to understand the fuse tap then say and I'll show you how the tap actually powers 2 circuits.

 

Yes, you can safely use both of those circuits to the same tap. They are very low amp circuits, and are not likely to ever be used at the same time at max amp output for an extended time to even warm up. I recommend a 5 amp fuse.

Thank you. My add a fuse currently has two 15A fuses in it. Are you suggesting that I change the one for the glovebox / usb to a 5A?
