So I decided on the Ninja over the Ducati... mainly because of price and the Ninja is just so nice

Hey man.. I had a 696 and I loved and hated it lol. Awesome fun bike. Sucks for two up riding. An is down on power. I had the ducati race mapped ecu and termi pipes. I would not buy another. Maybe the larger version 1198 monster. Of def look at the triumph speed triple

the Ninja 500 is a nice bike too... I just wish they kept it around. I would have gotten one of those instead of the Ninja 250 I had before this... apparently they are making a 400 next year but only for the Canadian and European market. I tried to find one used but the 500 being so popular made that a no go.

I had the Ninja 250 and grew out of it within a few months. If this is you first street bike I would consider the 650R I should have gotten it first. You can also find a used Ninja 500 too.

The 250 is buzzy and frustrating on the freeway

it is great around town and is very easy to ride... revs high, manueverable, and great mpg

The 400 is out already, saw them at the motorcycle show in January. I think 400cc is perfect for the city. I have a Hyosung 250.

cool, the 400 and the 500 would be perfect for around town... my 650 is just right though... its good on the hwy and around town. The Ninja 250 I had was great around town but lacked on the hwy and if you have to go more than 40 miles your ass goes numb from the buzzing.

I just got into street bikes last summer. I took the California MSF in August 2010, then bought a used 07 Ninja 650R w/ 10k miles for $2500 as my first bike ever in Sept 2010... just recently sold the Ninja 650R for $2000 w/ 15k miles and bought a 2009 GSXR 600 last month... the Ninja 650R is an awesome bike and sad I had to sell it but I needed a down payment for my new Gixxer6... the 50 mpg and decent handling in the twisties and forgiving throttle makes the Ninja 650R the BEST beginner bike... the Ninja 250 is good too as long as you don't want to go over 100mph... anyway, congratulations on the new ER6F!

I love the 650 so far... the 250 was great too, but it really was a pain on the freeway.

Take the 650 to the canyons! I was able to lean almost dragging knee with it. Too bad you don't live near Malibu. My friends and I hit up the Snake and the surrounding canyons once or twice per month. If you're ever in So Cal and want to test your skills, then let me know. Look up Malibu in google maps... crazy turns and some have long sweepers. So much fun! I miss my 650 already.

I think the 08-09 GSXR 600 is the best bike for a beginner that wants to start on a supersport. It has the 3 modes aka "Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) ... A-B-C... A mode is 100% of the power and is crazy quick for a noob... B mode feels the same as my Ninja 650r after cleaning & lubing the chain/sprocket and changing the old black oil to fresh oil... C mode feels like a Ninja 250r... the R6, CBR 600 RR, ZX6R, Daytona 675 and older GSXR 600 are harder bikes to learn on since they don't have the "Dumb-Down" B and C modes... those supersports can launch a noob from 0-60mph into a brick wall in 3 seconds when over twisting the throttle... I ride A mode for freeways, B mode for the streets and C mode when I need to save gas. I got 50mpg in C-mode!!! Been averaging only 35mpg on A-mode but that's probably b/c I like to launch asap and ride 100-110mph on freeways.

"Like the GSX-R1000 and Hayabusa, the GSX-R600 now features Suzuki's Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS) technology that allows the rider to choose among three distinct power output profiles on demand, via a handlebar-mounted switch. A mode corresponds with full power output; B mode reduces power by roughly 20 percent across the rev range, while C mode cuts output by about 40 percent. A new, 32-bit ECM boosted with 1024KB of ROM (up from 384KB in '07) handles the math to manage S-DMS and some additional EFI functionality."
