This is my first pick up. I've heard it's pretty easy to spin out. Does the VSC prevent that?

What are the do's and don't's for safe driving in Rain and Ice?

Light touch on the loud pedal, most of the weight of the truck is in the front. Always drive slower/safer than a car. Good tires is a huge help.

As long as you don't drive like a "Jackass"!

I had to do it also! I've driven trucks most of my life and I've never spun out... Just drive like you have some brains and you will be fine.

Much easier to spin out on the painted asphalt of crosswalks etc... in inclement weather.

I used to slide a lot on a certain turn on the way home every day. The first time it happened it scared me pretty good. I drove slower around that corner and it still happened. After a while I figured it wasn't because of my driving. I would never have a problem in any of my other cars. I found that the stock tires were not gripping good enough. That went away when I got different tires.

Do this, next time it rains, take the truck out to some big parking lot or some big paved area where you won't run into anything and find out for yourself. Romp on it from a dead stop, crank the wheel and romp on it, roll the rear wheels over a crosswalk and hit the gas, get it up to like 25mph and slam on the brakes. This will tell you what some of the limitations of the truck are. It's light in the rear, in bad weather the rear can break loose. It's not a car, don't try to drive it like one, it can break loose easier and won't handle like a car and takes longer to stop than a car.

This is the best advice you'll get.

When I was 16 I had a '79 Corolla. That winter a couple friends and I spent far too much time in a huge (several city block) parking lot just being stupid. Every time it snowed or got icy we would head there. It was large enough that you could get up to highway speeds before pulling the handbrake, turning too tightly, etc. I learned more in 5 minutes in an empty icy lot than a year of driver's education could have provided.

Thanks for the replies. Note to self:
    1. do not speed like a jackass while raining.
    2. do not think for a second I will be all right on ice with 4x4
    3. may need more room when breaking hard. avoid school zones
    4. I guess VSC won't save me.
