We've had many an ignition switch and/ or cylinder fail, but mostly on the older Accords Pilots and Odysseys. Not chronic, but not uncommon.

I don't like key fobs to begin with. Push to start needs a functioning fob to work. Some vehicles might start with a standard key. MB can be start with their turn key fob if you remove the start button. IDK if any other manufacturers have a removable start button. Removable start button, with a standard turn key would be a good idea.

I'm sure they do fail, I've never experienced it myself, and it probably isn't an expensive fix.

What cost more a replacement fob, or switch and cylinder?

Isn't it like a AA battery icon?

I rather take my chances with a standard ignition.

That's my disposition as well. I'm not a fan of a lot of the new technology they're cramming into new cars, but being a parts guy at a dealership I see more of the cons than the pro's.

That's fine. But you're opinion of "push button start and key fobs are junk" has 0 support or factual evidence. It's just you resisting innovation and change.
A push button start is the natural progression. Once you think about it, inserting a key and twisting is an archaic idea.
I see absolutely zero downsides to having push button start, and no reason why a manufacturer would cling to antiquated key and ignition switches.

Key fobs junk up my key ring, I don't like all that stuff hanging of my belt loop. I'm not going to start carrying a murse just to put my keys in.

I don't see many advantages to them either. But, as a car manufacturer who is pressured to come out with new features, I think it's just the natural process.
TBH, ignition switches have been a big issue sometimes. Anyone remember Chevy's huge recall with failing ignition switches? On the Cobalts and some other models I believe.
That wasn't that long ago, like 7-10 years.
In that situation, the ignition switch was actually turning all the way off, and locking the steering wheel. Once you think about it "Hmm...this is 2009...why do we still use this stupid system of a physical key and twisting motion...?" especially combined with other issues such as this ignition switch failure, fumbling with the key in the dark, ignition switches fatiguing if people have a heavy keychain, accidentally draining the battery by leaving the key on "on" or accessory.
It's just not a concept that anyone would newly invent in this day and age. It doesn't make sense.

lol. I guess you don't use fobs at all then. I bet you walk right up to your door, and un/lock with the key - every single time. On your shiny 2012 Tacoma? I bet you even miss the keyhole a couple times a week, and your door has small scratches every where.
And then I bet, after every single time you use the key to physically unlock the door, you slowly reach down and put the key back in your pocket, so you don't grab the door handle, key in hand, and do this?

If you can't open a door with a key and not scratch your door then you are an idiot/lazy or careless. Either way it's behind the actual handle so unless it's a show car who gives a toss if it's scratched there.

You should keep ignition keys separate from your other keys.

I do like the AJT fobs, if you have to use a fob for your Tacoma.

Hmmm it's 2018, why use a stupid old fob. Get a RFID chip implanted in your index finger use that as your smart key.
