I have done some reading, I’m going to put one of these on. Maybe tomorrow if I can find some time.

I have the same cut you just did and a magnaflow muffler and its very mild when driving around town. I can only hear it a little when i step on it because the blower whine is louder. Not ricey at all. Not sure what part # the muffler is though

The one that sounded ricey was the Magnaflow cat back. I couldn’t find a good video of just a muffler welded in.

Here's my magnaflow muffler welded in part number 12645
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FQdRKMbCSg

The cat-back system is louder because the muffler is way smaller 3". I bought the biggest muffler they had that fit on 2.25" stock exhaust piping and it's a lot more quieter.
At idle you can barley hear it when it's warmed up, to me it sounds like a quieter TRD exhaust (it would be even quieter the farther away from the cab the exhaust tip or exit is too.)

Anyways to your original question. It shouldn't move to much mine is cut before the axle and it's sturdy.

I'll likely replace my exhaust this year due to rust and will probably go with something dumped under the bed so I don't have to deal with that tacky chrome tip most manufacturers add to the tailpipe.

Anyone in states requiring vehicle inspections run into any issues for some silly nanny state exhaust modification rule?

I'm currently exempt from inspections, but move around a lot.

Just got that Dynomax Super Turbo put on. I really can’t tell a difference. I may be asking too much from a V6, but I was hoping for a little more of a growl.

In my opinion, we have the wrong trucks for a mean sounding exhaust.

I think I just learned that lesson..

I think my point of reference is the problem, the 1995 Ram I had with the 360 sounded like a monster.

I originally was gonna do an exhaust chop, but then I just decided to buy the magnaflow off-road pro turndown exhaust. Looks and sounds great.

Took the hacksaw back out, cut before the axle, and it sounds pretty good now. Close to what I was going for, thanks for the help everyone.

I put the Dynomax on this morning but thanks. I like it, but wish it was just a tad louder.

After two trips to Moab, calling trips, mountain roads in Montana.... I say don't worry about it.

Been axle dumped since May 2016.

Here in California they are strict. I went to some random smog shop by my dads house and talked to the guy. I asked him if having the exhaust cut after the muffler will make my truck not pass. He said "No". So waited my turn and got it smogged. It passed with no issues.

Can’t you just make a temporary pipe with some flexible piping that you can clamp on for inspection and then take off?
