I want to cut my tail pipe right after the exhaust or on the downturn. Can anyone tell me if there are any potential problems with carbon monoxide or any noticeable changes in sound?

I have mine cut right after the rear axle, which is still a couple feet after the muffler (is that what you are referencing as the "exhaust") it slightly louder under certain conditions, but I think its fine. I also have the deck plate mod which adds some intake sound too.

I'm not worried about CO, but then agin I don't ride in the bed or anything either. Lots of people have shortened the rear exhaust this way.

Dumping it after the axle is very common among people here. I'm planning on doing mine eventually.
As long as the exhaust isnt breathing on wiring or anything thats not supposed to be hot, you should be alright.

I cut mine just behind the muffler bracket due to a hole in the pipe. No issues to include submerging it in a water hole. See my build for pics.

may be louder in the cab because of the sound bouncing off the road and back into the cabin/bed

I cut mine off at the muffler due to my rear shock relocation. You will notice more of a rumble and "gurgling" exsaust note when letting off the gas. I plan on extending the pipe eventually. I think its accelerating some bed rust as well.

This is how I want to do my custom cat-back because of:

I'm just not looking forward to the extra work it will take vs. just angling down before the axle. The parts are cheap (ebay 2.25" two bolt flange repair kit, Toyota 2 bolt o2 bung, some pipe), but buying some pre-bends, cutting and welding to get up over the axle is going to be a little work.

For those replacing their muffler, to break in my Mig a buddy and I did his 3.Slow catback- cut out the restrictive OE muffler (unlike us [3.4], its well documented to get gains from getting rid of that muffler) and replaced it with a free-be laying around Lexus IS300 resonator, and salvaged some of his OE exhaust piping to route the output angled down after going up and over the rear axle. Sound level is near stock, and a for-sure power gain. Not bad for some electricity and some spool.

I plan on doing the same thing (except make it from scratch instead of cutting up the OE cat-back- have another IS300 resonator lying around) and am crossing my fingers the sound level will be low- I don't like the sound modded 3.4s make, and am too old to be making noise, its my DD and I like the quiet power (a little supercharging whine is all and she scoots).
