So I'll make a super long story short. My buddy's looking into a 2006 gmc 2500hd. It's from Florida and has no rust no body work really good condition. A guy did a duramax swap into it. Now it has an Allison tranny, loaded interior, Bose speakers with heated leather seats along with the lbz duramax. What I was wondering since the title will say 2006 gmc 2500 with a 6.0 gas will he run into problems? We test emissions here in Cleveland but not if you have truck plates. Any input would be appreciated. And I'm assuming he could never trade it in or might even have a hard time selling since it's a motor swap

If it had the 6.0L motor, it already had a 1000 Series Allison transmission in it...

You will have to check your state laws. In Arizona, if you registered it somewhere that doesn't require emissions you would be fine.

And yeah, he will probably never be able to sell the vehicle. At least to someone that knows anything about vehicles.

He says that it's a diesel someone will buy it. But I told him be careful. I know guys do cummins swaps in fords all the time. I was wondering if they have problems or is it because it's going from gas to diesel

Anything is possible in the automotive world.

If the conversion was clean and everything mounts up properly he could sell it to someone who just had money to blow and doesn't care if it is a swapped powertrain.

Problems will arise depending on the situation. The problem is not going from gas to diesel, it's how they do it.

    Which vehicles must be tested?
All gasoline and diesel-fueled vehicles, including flexible fuel and hybrid vehicles, equal to or less than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), 25 years old or newer from the current testing year, and registered within an E-Check county must comply with the E-Check requirement. All even model year vehicles must test in even-numbered years. All odd model year vehicles must test in odd-numbered years.

New vehicles are exempt for the first four model years.

For more information, please visit our Need a Test? Web site.

Just got that from the e check website. Seems like all he has to do is run truck plates and he's all set with emissions

Of course. It will have to look exactly like stock. Not some hill jack in a shed trying to stuff a duramax in a truck

Right. Meaning, how do the motor mounts look, the transmission adapter, wiring harnesses, etc.

Good luck. Tell your buddy to just go buy a Silverado that came with an LBZ from the factory.

Not saying that the truck in question DIDN'T have an Allison in the first place, but I have worked on plenty of Chevy and GMC 2500HDs with the 6.0 and the 4L80E transmission, instead of the Allison. Of course all of the 6.6 Duramax had the Allison. That is a given. If the OP can get me a VIN number I can verify all the details.

That is correct, I forget that people buy heavy duty trucks without the better tranny in it. Sorry for assuming lol.

That's what he wants but they are so damn expensive here. A 2006 loaded 4 door leather and all that junk is going for 37k! Grant it it has 45k but damn that's Pretty damn expensive.
And bama I'll get the vin when I go and see it. They guy isn't done finishing up the truck yet he was just talking to him over the phone about details. Also I forgot to add that all the emissions stuff has been deleted like egr all the piping with it cats mufflers all that stuff. So if he would need an e check it would fail

Problems with registering or emissions will depend on the state. Typically states with e-tests for both gas and diesel will not pass engines that are built to older particulate standards to be put in newer trucks. For example, it's difficult to 'legally' get an old 94-98 12valve cummins into a new truck say 2010 or so because the engine particulates don't meet the 2010 standards. In CT, you typically have to go to DMV's headquarters to register the conversion as the DMV uses the VIN to call out what engine is in the truck and the gas truck VIN would call for an OBD e-test that the diesel wouldn't pass. I had been kicking around the idea of putting in a cummins 4BTA from an old delivery truck (think FedEx type) into a smaller new truck but that was quickly stopped due to the issues above.

FWIW, my former truck up to last summer was a '96 cummins. When I bought it new (in '96) there wasn't any emissions testing in CT. A few years later, they started a particulate test. Keep that in mind, just because they currently aren't testing today, they just might tomorrow...

Is a 2500HD GMC considered light duty? My cummins wasn't - I had 8800lb rating from the factory. That put me in a different emissions rating class.

I'll call the ohio e check place tomorrow and get some more information. It seems like it varies state to state. Also this seems like a huge pain in the ass.

Well wait a minute! How does diesel toys.com do it? A diesel isn't a factory option here in the u.s. Would you have to go change your title?

Um, kinda self explaining there. 2500HD...i.e. 2500 Heavy Duty. So no, it is not considered a light duty truck.
