I've gotten lucky at DT here - a bunch of the techs drive tricked out manual subarus and VWs so they do just fine.

Have had to hunt around at the Toyota dealers though. Really surprising how the dealers don't have more people that can do it.

Went to get a tire alignment and got a call hours later. Truck won’t move. I went back and taught them how to put it in gear. Smh

I agree that I like M/T, but my auto is easier in traffic and when I pull a muscle. I go drive my brother’s Gen 1 M/T when I want to enjoy shifting.

Just added toolbox and roof-rack to haul my fishing boat 100's of miles into the backwoods every week. Goodrich K02s, Bilstein 5100 front and back, no lift.
Honestly, I think learning on a manual should be mandatory.

Problem with automatics is you never get a feel for the road and never learn the relationship between RPMs and handling.

Automatics are like driving a go cart with a gas and brake pedal. Anyone can do it, but the mechanics of driving are lost. A manual forces you to focus on driving. Approaching a stop, begin gearing down. Gear up to get moving. Lower the gear going into corners. You actually have to learn how to drive and become a safer driver for it.

Nowadays approaching a stop means free time to look at your phone. A yellow light means step on it, and stop signs are just a suggestion. Christ, everyone punching their gas and coming to fast stops these days because of automatics. Sad driving habits.

My first car, 3 on the tree Parisienne. Had about 250K miles on it when I took ownership. This pic from the web, but I have a lot of pictures in the family photo album of this car on many hunting and camping/fishing trips in BC, even with bull moose strapped to the roof. Put a moose on a Tacoma roof (or any modern car or truck) and it will fall through into the seats with you.

Everyone in our family from grandparents down, learned on a stick. No one has ever had an accident. I taught my wife to drive her first car on a stick. Thirty years later she finally got her first automatic.

My 2016 Taco is my first automatic since 1986.

There are many drivers on the road who have no idea how to use the throttle to do anything other than go faster.

Free time phone users that are the 1st car at the light who stop six car lengths before the line are the worse.

Yup. Watched as three guys had to push my Tacoma into a service bay at the Toyota dealer for an oil change because nobody knew how to drive it.

To ability to drive an automatic is equal to the ability to drive a golf cart. Im sorry auto guys, but this video is 100% real.

Young and dumb was I (and pogh!), but when me younger bro and his friend would ask, “Can you drive us to Huntington Beach to boogie?” “You got 5 bucks for gas?” “Yup.” Off we were cruising (literally) all the way from East L.A…

The drive back was always tough…traffic in a 5 speed Datsun 310 hatchback was brutal!!!!

my parents were adamant that i should never have a manual transmission car. it was one stern warning away from them not agreeing to help finance the first vehicle purchase if i tried pushing for a manual. 6 years later, 3 of 4 siblings all had manual transmissions... i'm the only one that still does, due to family growth and the lack of minivans with manual transmissions.

i taught myself to drive a manual out of boredom. i read about the process in a 1994 suburban owners manual when i was 13, while waiting for my mom to come out to the car to drive me somewhere. it wasn't until i was 17 that i finally drove a manual. the dealership i was a porter at was vehemently opposed to me trying what i knew on any customer cars-- they were convinced that i was going to either burn the clutch or send it through the showroom.

after the first year of having to grab someone to move every stick (it was a saab dealer, plenty of opportunity considering the quirkiness), i had heard how the 'knowers' manipulated the gas, so i matched what they did with the gas pedal, and then modulated the clutch pedal like how the suburban's owners manual had instructed. it was another 6 months before the service manager could suddenly make time to 'teach' me how to drive stick. by that time, i was running around the parking lot in the used cars, teaching myself rev-matching...

lol, i do this in my manual. you're just complaining about the world, not transmissions anymore!

even funnier, my mom's driving test in 1970-something, she approached a light that turned yellow and punched it in a v8-equipped chrysler.. the way she tells it "my mom always did it, and they never said anything in drivers ed!" she got a 30 minute lecture by the road test instructor, and had to re-take the driving test again...

so going faster at yellow lights and optional stop signs have been going on well over 40 years!

A motorcycle is more complicated than a stick shift... Lemme see if I can remember: right hand = throttle and front brake. right foot = rear brake left hand = clutch Left foot = (sequential) shifter

    is that it?
