Check your brake fluid level. Top off with DOT 3/4.

also operate the e-brake to be sure its fully disengaged.

I used mine once and was sure I fully released it only to find out a few days later the handle wasn't fully disengaged. this does not mean the brake is doing anything, just that the handle isn't fully retracted so the light comes on. this and low brake fluid are the most common reasons to have these lights.

Check brake fluid then check your brake pads, if they still look good then top off and make sure you don't see anywhere around your brake components that's wet

It could be that your ebrake needs adjustment. That's what the issue was with my '98 when the brake light remained on.

I have no idea if that translates to your '83 though.

Sensor is probably not being pushed by brake handle, follow the handle down towards the firewall and see if the sensor is being pushed by the little flat pin or if it bent or broke off maybe. Also if the brake cable has too much slack from dirty siezed brake lever under the truck then it could push the brake handle out enough to not trigger the sensor to shut off.

This was my issue. When I'd release the ebrake it wouldn't fully nest, it would jut back out a few millimeters. It was enough to not make full contact with the sensor.

I merely adjusted it under the driver's side along the frame.

They can be a pain to adjust without cleaning and re-greasing the whole assembly becuase of dirt and rust but shouldn't need to buy anything new unless the cable is frayed. I've had to clean all of my toyota e-brakes because of this. Must be why they went straight from the e-handle to the drums.

well the sensor that is near the fire wall is getting pressed down to. i even pulled the e brake and push the sensor my self to make sure it is getting pressed the whole way. so i guess we can mark that off the list to

Unplug the sensor and see if it shuts off the light, could be bad.

Yes, there should be a connector a few inches from the sensor

that didnt work either. i pulled it and the light still stayed on. but when your pull the e brake the light stays the same brightness. but when the sensor is still together it gets brighter when u pull the e brake
