I've done 4.10 to 4.30s once to get that wee bit more on my old V6 Tacoma on 255/85/16. I really liked the difference it made for the overall money spent (sold the 4.10s and made almost all my money back). I felt 4.56 would be that much better, but those are near impossible to find used, and I didn't care for spending $$$$ for new.

In fact, I liked it so much that when my current Tacoma came with 4.88 gears, I swapped them out for some 4.30s and have been much much happier on the highway.

I agree with the sentiment that if you can do it for basically the cost of gear oil (and your time and effort), then why would you not do it...

Mine is a prerunner. What difference would it make other than it not matching front ratio if I did have 4wd. Thinking about getting picking this up OP

You guys are all aware that the non-locker, 6-lug (1st Gen) Tacoma rear end usually (always?) came with an 8.4" open diff...you *cannot* just swap in the 8" e-locker diff on the Tacoma by notching the housing (and relocating some diff studs too, btw)--you would need the whole e-locker axle tube/housing in addition. They are different sized diffs. (The 3rd Gen 4runner is a different story..they always came with an 8" rear regardless of e-locker or open).

And also if you're 4x4, and you go from 4.10 to 4.30 in the rear, you gotta do the same for the front diff also...

I think op say "can not"
It wouldn't be a direct replacement, is probably what he meant to say.

8.4 fitted to fit 8 elocker, possible = yes. Simple as changing oil = no. Why go through all that trouble. Just buy a complete elocker axle and swap complete axle. Would I try to fab the 8.4 housing to fit the 8 elocker, definitely no. Too much work, I can justify buying a complete elocker axle with diff for 600 and sell my 8.4 for a few hundred buck as a come up. No stress, no welding cutting, measuring etc... Haha life's too short to stress...

What I said was an answer to a question on whether a 4.10 equipped e-locker Tacoma could swap to this 4.30, I believe that answer is yes, it's a pretty direct swap.

Sorry for mudding this thread up further... heh. I stand corrected in saying you "cannot" do it...I had no idea the e-locker could fit with just modding the non-elocker Tacoma rear housing...just takes some work, similarly to the 4runner/v6 housings e-locker mods... I apologize. Dunno what rock I've been living under...musta just been all the times I've read about 8.4" vs 8"...which apparently, there's no such thing as an 8.4...its being called that incorrectly... :-/. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyota-truck-4runner/228681-myth-settled-8-4-v6-4cyl-all-8-a.html

Anyway, bump for the OP... somebody buy this 4.30 e-locker. :D

I'm looking for to switch my 4.10s to 4.30s. I'm a 4x4 so I'd need front and rear. My truck is an '02 v6 with the factory locker. My zip code is 95017, mind checking what shipping would cost?

Around $65 shipped in a 5gal bucket. As far as fronts i'll have to check. You may have to buy a new ring and pinion for the front.

Your 4:10 locker will sell easy. You'll get that money back on the rear locker.

You can find 4.30 front complete diffs at wreckers pretty easily... a LOT cheaper than buying new gears (and having to pay install)...
