    Hello,

I'm Jim. Only been a Toyota owner for a couple years now.
    I've got a 2009 Tacoma 4x4, 4 door, TRD Sport.

    Question:
Easiest, Cheapest, most productive way to convert the rear axle to an E-locker?

New axle that's equipped with e-locker already?
Can you just by the 3rd member and swap it out on the Sport version?
Air locker seems to be an expensive way to go.

Any and all opinions welcome. If anyone has done this any advice would be great.

    Thanks,
    Jiim

I think doing the 3rd member would be the easiest route, then you just need to add a wiring harnes to power it.

New axle with e-locker already, but you also have to get the wiring harness and switch internally to actuate it. You cannot swap a 3rd member from an 8.4" into a 8" axle housing (you can actually, but it is very time consuming and way beyond diminishing returns). Air lockers are more expensive but that is for good reason. You can keep your LSD (Auto) and still lock when needed as opposed to a lunch box setup.

not possible without modifying the axle housing in addition to the wiring.

Don't waste your time or money on the E locker. bite the bullet once and go air.

But pulling the 3rd and adding an after market elocker to the original should work, and be cheaper then the other two.

Any links to Salvage yards or shops that have Axles would be appreciated as well.

    Thanks,

Not sure what aftermarket is available for an 8.4" but that would be an option. I assumed you meant stock 8" e-locker.

I've swapped my elocker for an 8.4" with an arb.. it's basically plug and play, you just need the switch and wiring harness. But I wouldn't swap a sport rear end for an e locker rear end, just add an ARB .. the cost difference is miniscule anyway
