I am trying to figure out which is better to keep the engine 'clean' from gunk buildup. I do understand octane, and how ethanol works in fuel mixtures, but I cannot find a good consensus on using pure gas vs top tier gas with ethanol. The only E0 gas near me is 87 octane, unbranded gas. The top tier gas, which is recommended by Toyota, can be found easier, and I am wondering if E0 gas needs additives like the ethanol gas to avoid gunk buildup. Any help shedding light on this is appreciated!

I'm pretty sure any advice you'll get here will be pure speculation. Unless you're taking apart your engine and looking at the "gunk" -- you'll never know. IMHO stick with the available E10 and you'll be fine.

I think you can't go wrong using top tier gas.

What's important is clean fresh fuel, and run the vehicle hard enough occasionally to prevent carbon buildup.

Certainly E0 is better. Performance wise, MPG wise and when not government subsidized, production cost wise, not to mention energy wise.

E10 is a solution whose problem has left the building. But the corn growers own their legislators, so good luck with revoking that nonsense.

Problem is, as it sits for the end consumer at the pump, it's not a break even cost/benefit, unless you're going racing.

What is this top tier gas being spoken about? Seems like it is some marketing gimmick...? I would believe any name brand station will have decent petrol to use, all of which is less ideal than ethanol free stuff. There are 4-5 ethanol free providers by me which is great for the bikes and lawn equipment, but the 'yota runs fine on the corn gas.

The only ethanol free gas in the Las Vegas area is a Rebel gas station and its 110octane. Not sure if I have the balls to try it

The Owners Manual Recommends you use Top Tier Fuel in the Truck, its supposed to be guaranteed to have a certain amount of additives in it.

Ethanol fuel has tons of advantages IF the vehicle is tuned for it. I'm guessing that's what you meant sort of by your last statement. At the end of the day the Tacoma isn't tuned for any level of ethanol and the parts in the fuel system aren't designed to tolerate some of Ethanol's nasty chemical characterists so I'd avoid E10 like the plague if I planned on running my truck until it's death.

I think you are thinking E85. as damn near all gas in the US and canada contains ethanol. your truck will will run fine on E10. just like winter blend. now, if you can find ethanol fee gas go for it as it will last longer then todays shitty ethanol mix gas

Lots of good points above. I guess I'm trying to figure out if pure gas without additives burns cleaner and benefits the longevity of my engine as opposed to top tier ethanol gas. Right now I follow what the manual advises, to use top tier, but that seems to be most of the gas market availability these days.

Run fine on E10? Yes. Is it good for the fuel pump and injectors that are not designed for ethanol at any concentration? Nope. Ask any mechanic. The moment they mandated E15 was okay in Canada was the moment that auto shops started carrying injectors and pumps for modern vehicles on hand. Toyota didn't modify the materials in those components at all when the change came into effect.

Basically in the short term it doesn't matter but in the long term E10 will cost you. I run V Power from Shell here because it's guaranteed E0 in Canada.

A truck could be made to run extremely well on E10.. but most companies cheap out and don't optimise the fuel system to run it all the time. Tolerance versus acceptance.

E0 from an unbranded station still has the meet the state or federal requirements for detergents and all other standards. It's not garbage gas like you may find in some other countries.

I live in Socal and there is no E0 gasoline here. Even in 91

Oh cool, how did you find out shell v power is E0? I tried to find that out where I'm at, but it only lists vpower as E10.

It's advertised right on the pump in Canada. Basically in Canada when there is Ethanol in the gas they have to state that right on the pump below the Octane. The sticker says "fuel may contain Ethanol at a concentration of 15 percent or lower." On the V Power pumps the sticker isn't present because it contains no Ethanol here. I know it's not the same in the USA.

In the USA there used to be a website that tracked where Ethanol free gas was sold. I'm not sure it exists anymore.

I've seen a couple of gas stations in the USA similar to this.

Interesting, haven't seen any pumps like that. Wish it was mandated to be listed. The only website I know of is pure gas.com, but I don't know how accurate it is.

The pump itself only has to have a sticker that says the gas may contain up to 10% ethanol. It's not listed per octane choice
