    As a geologist I find earthquakes completely fascinating, but it is horrible to see the devastation to people's lives they cause. :(


    For an earthquake of this size (8.9), it would not be uncommon at all for 5-10 aftershocks to be as powerful as the 7-7.5 magnitude range, so they are not out of danger yet. For reference, the Loma Prieta earthquake (World Series quake of 1989 was only at 6.9 magnitude). Things are far from over :(

    Shut down to avoid the rest of the country from losing service. Call traffic in the early AM uses facilities in the pacific to route calls due to less traffic on facilities out west. The natural disaster and resulting unexpected call traffic placed a burden on the facilities in the west.

    In the AM time zone back east, 06:00 to 09:00 est, calls from NYC to Atlanta may go from NYC to Cali to Atlanta due to the low utilization of Facilities from Cali to the east coast.

    If the services are not there then alternate routing of calls take place automatically. There was probably disruptions to call traffic on the east coast this morning.
