I'm debating a lift kit (2-3") because I see so many posts about creaking, popping, noisy suspension components afterwards. Sounds like it can potentially be a huge headache. Please take the poll. Thanks!

Currently I am leaning towards the basic OME kit.

    Modding comes with significant risk.

If you aren't comfortable with the risk, don't do it.

Every truck is different. 1000 people can answer your poll with no, and have the same lift kit you want, and your truck can still have problems. Others experiences are fairly pointless.

    See sentence #2.

If you're going through these worries now, stick with your OEM stuff and don't mess with the truck.

If you want a lift DO IT. Second quessing and what if's are a waste of time and energy. If you WANT it do it. OME's a good start.

When I bought my 2nd generation at the very end of the 2015 model year, I felt the same way. But research on here helped me and I made the right decision for me about the nature of lift that I wanted and needed for my truck. My needs were modest, and everything went well. The problem is that Toyotas have such incredible high speed driveability that you hate to lose that by screwing it up. But at the end of the day it is a machine, and the various lifts are well known. Do your research, make good choices and it will turn out great. My truck is so much better than stock, thanks to all the guys at Tacoma World for sharing their experiences and being so helpful.

I generally agree, but recent experiences and subsequent research (in the form of talking to about a dozen Toyota-specialized aftermarket shops) has shown that the exact same components that work on nine Tacomas without a problem, will cause problems on the tenth, and not only do most "expert" shops not know why this happens, but most can't even properly debug and fix them. If someone's not comfortable with the idea of (potentially) needing to dig in and figure things out for themselves, lifting carries the risk of being a very expensive and/or painful process.

We have to spend our money on something. Have fun with your truck. Do it yourself and learn a little as you do. Save everything you take off in case you want to go back to stock.

To bro or not to bro my truck, that is the question ...

With any modification or any car or truck there comes a cost. I've been modding my cars and now truck over a decade, from lowering to now raising my vehicles- there's always a trade off, it's either gonna ride rougher or softer, creak more often and cause more things to look at maintenance wise.
Toyota built this Truck a certain way and if you're happy how they built the truck, why change it?
I myself think it's a greatly engineered truck, contrary to Consumer Reports (a big fuck offf to you) but I like the added ground clearance and wheel clearance with a lift- hence I'm going to lift with probably Bilstein shocks as they suit my needs better

The real question is? If lifting the truck causes problems, will lowering make it better?

I was in the same boat a while back when I owned a GTI (mod or not to mod). Ended up doing a lot more than I thought. It wasn't so scary after I took the plunge.

As long as you understand that you are taking on some risk, and are ok with that, I say go for it.

The unasked question is why you need a lift at all?

    1) Is it a need to improve functionality that the vehicle is lacking, like ground clearance etc?

    2) Or is it just for parking lot style points?

If #1, call Marie @HeadStrong Off-Road and get the right gear. Yes, things can go awry, but much less likely if you start out with the right bits.

If #2, consider leaving it stock. The vehicle is quite capable in showroom form, even more so with a bit more aggressive tire.

If #2 and you are going to BurgerKing it (have it your way), see the solution for #1.

Good reason to only lift the front, that way the rear end geometry stays the same so you won't have any driveline vibrations.

Bros have been doing it successfully for years.

My only lifting recommendation is to do the ECGS bushing while you're in there. Sure, you may be in the group of people that never needed. However, if you're not, it really stinks busting apart everything you put together to replace the bushing.

Also...buy a proper torque wrench and hit all the fasteners to the recommended level. The only clank I had was actually from a loose rear leaf spring, and it was solved with a torque wrench.

As long as you buy quality parts, take your time with the installation and pay attention to the details, you should be fine.
