Another foampile fuckery thread, which is why some people just shouldn’t work on their vehicles.

let’s have foampile calculate the torque applied at the outer radius of the rotor based on the rotor diameter with 173 ft/lb applied at the axle centerline, and then take that torque value and compare it to the shear force required to break the screwdriver or cause plastic deformation. If there is a small margin to potential damage, I suggest recalculating with a stronger screwdriver with higher shear modulus.

I’d rather know the sound frequency that the impact makes at 173 ft/lbs.

I was under the impression that saying, “It sounds tight” was a sufficient replacement for “click”.
Throw the wheel back on boys, it ain’t going no where.

I’m not a mechanic, I’m a problem solver. Remove the entire spindle and put the CV in a vice and torque it. If it slips in the vice tack weld it. If you don’t like that idea work backwards to the idea with the least resistance.

That would be letting someone else do it.
But I don’t think OP is open to that idea?

That is another way to skin the cat.

I was also thinking maybe bolt the whole wheel up to the hub assembly, put the torque wrench on the axle nut, calculate the weight required to spin the tire to achieve 173 ft/lbs. go find a random person that weighs that amount and have them hang on the tire until the torque wrench clicks.

I just slide the wrench up and down to the correct setting. More leverage or less leverage:D

The other way to do it is install the wheel leaving the center cap off. Then torque with wheels on the ground.

I know one guy that uses the differential to do this by locking the opposite side. It's nuts.

I'm a firm believer in the screwdriver method. I use it on nearly every vehicle.

I used to use the pry bar method but there's injury risk vs equipment risk.

If there isn’t potential for injury, then the plan isn’t any good.

Step 1 of any good plan is always, “Try not to get hurt”.
