    Hi guys,

I just bought a 2002 Tacoma PreRunner DoubleCab from a childhood friend of mine last weekend. He is the original owner and had all of the paperwork for maintenance, repairs and upgrades, but not the sales papers or window sticker to show the exact configuration and options.

It has the SR5 (w/ Chrome) Package, TRD Package and Power Package and several individual options like Cruise Control, Sliding Rear Window and Tow Hitch (to name a few). The only thing i can't figure out is if it has the optional ABS. Short of slamming on the brakes and potentially locking the wheels (and it can't be too good for the tires either), how can I determine if it has Anti-Lock Brakes?

    Thanks!

There is a sensor on the hub. You should see wires running down your knuckle to the sensor

Grey wire and keyless entry. I like stock.
If it has ABS, the ABS light will come on and go off on the instrument cluster when you start the truck. Also, check by your upper ball joints. Should see a wire coming up the knuckle to the upper control arm if you have ABS. Lastly, look under the hood. ABS unit will be on the passenger side back towards the firewall. Has a bunch of brake lines routed into it.

Have one of these on the passenger inner fender?

Floor it into snowy traffic. Slam the brakes and see what happens

    That's how I'd check.

That's the ABS pump. If it has ABS that pump will be there on the passenger fender with (I can't remember how many, 5 or 6) hard brake lines plumbed to it.

This is the best way. I have an 02 Tacoma that does not have ABS but the rear end is setup for it (abs axles, wiring, etc.).

Very curious to your reply. Why don't you have abs if it was set up for it? Reason I ask is b/c I have that same setup up but I don't believe I have ever had ABS on my truck as the brakes have always locked up even when it was new

In 02, ABS was a pretty rare option with most trucks not having it. But it seems like they used the abs rear axles/housings anyways. Not sure if all 02s abs axles/hubs but i'd guess lots if not most do. 03/04 ABS wasn't an option anymore so they all have ABS.

I just did rear axle seals on my truck last month and ended up having to do 1 rear bearing. All the tutorials call for pressing on a new ABS rotor ring which is a $50+ part. But since my truck doesn't actually have abs, there's no reason to buy a new one and press it on.

    edit:
If you don't have ABS, but want to know if you have the ABS rear end, you can check to see if you have the port for the ABS sensor (and the end of the rear axle housing will be wider to accommodate the cog wheel inside). the abs sensor goes into the side of the housing and on my 02 Tacoma, there is just a plastic cover there in place of the actual sensor.

    Stock. EZ pass.Dump pass.Inspection sticker.Convict printed lic.plates.FG cap.
ABS became standard equipment on all 2004 models as did the ABS dash indicater light. My 03 has ABS but no dash light.

Mine has a spot for an ABS fuse in the box under the hood, but it doesn't have any contacts. Seems like a good way to check.

All E-Locker 8.0” axles are setup for ABS (TRD v6 Models) — even without ABS equipped. None ABS models have a plug on the ABS sensor ports.

    Post is from 2015.

FYI best way in any vehicle is to find gravel on the right side ditch, roll along and brake in the gravel lightly. Any ABS system will trigger on this.

The big ugly thing on the right inner fender is a good clue
