Planning on heading north in about a week from So. Cal to visit family, then returning to Eastern Oregon for a few more days of exploring. Back to Steens Mtn. https://traveloregon.com/things-to-...eas/a-trip-to-steens-oregons-secret-mountain/

Then down into the Alvord Desert
    https://localadventurer.com/alvord-desert-oregon/

    Leslie Gulch and Succor Creek,

    https://gary-randall.com/leslie-gulch-trip/

    https://oregonstateparks.org/index.cfm?do=parkPage.dsp_parkPage&parkId=9

then south to Hwy 95 into Nevada and back home to So. Cal. via 395.

Any additional suggestions for Eastern Oregon?

Try Hart Mtn. if you haven't been there before. I read your last Oregon trip report, but dont remember if you got up there. There is some decent wheeling to be had.

If you like rock hounding you can hit up the Sunstone collection area near Plush.

And we were at Succor creek and Leslie Gulch last year, awesome times!

We're leaving Friday for SW Oregon for a week then working our way east. Hot springs and possible the Steens before leaving the state and working our way back to Texas.

I’ll have to post a photo while I’m using the accommodations, they look great and just our style!

I’ve been reading up on Glass Butte, Hart Mtn sunstones and also Hart Mountain Jasper, wow! Any good open collecting areas on Hart Mtn for Jasper?

I really appreciate the recommendations guys, this will be an awesome trip!

Good point. They do allow surface collecting only, and there’s a limit to how much you can take. I think it’s 7 pounds per person.

I found some info with rudimentary google-fu. You shouldn't have trouble finding jasper.

Just got back to So Cal... the trip was great. Have to thank everyone for some good ideas on where to go, plus we found some of our own. My favorite was definitely the backroads between Fields and Hart Mtn, we picked some that were not used for awhile and got some sagebrush pinstripes for it, but hey, it’s a truck now.

One of our late night camp spots - love those plastic trilevelers, just need 2 and they make it so much easier! - Yeah, that’s a legal BLM road we are on! They are not well traveled at all and we did not see anyone else for miles.

Such a great trip! We collected a bunch of cool rocks, including obsidian and “sunstones”, and saw some incredible landscapes.

    More later...

Hey, @toucan - How is the hot spring? We need pictures -not of you though! :D

We didn’t make it to that area :(, as we had a squall line and lightening come through the refuge the day and evening we were there. But we had a good time and camped away from that area while we were driving through- another time, another trip!
