    Parboy -

Does this assist when lifting/closing the tailgate at all? Like the damper on the Tundra does. Or is it simply an assist in lowering/opening the tailgate.

I don't see any problem with using a bed extender. This mounts to the left side of the tailgate. Now I don't have a bed extender, so I can't say for 100% certainty.

It's just to keep the tailgate from slamming down. It adds a tiny bit of resistance when closing the gate.

have you had any problems with the strut rubbing or chafing against the existing cable? I read that was a problem with the 09's.

Actually, yes. I just removed the cable from the side where the strut is. IMO there is enough holding power with the strut only on that side and the cable on the other. I've had over 400lbs sitting on the tailgate and didn't notice any problems with it supporting the weight.

i dont understand the point of these things. our tailgates and doors on toyota's are feather light. on an older Ranger or F150, those are heavy tailgates. my tacoma tailgate feels at least half the weight of my 07' ranger. you can lower the tailgates on our trucks with a few fingers...

maybe i need to see it and feel it... i dunno...

I do agree with you. The issue becomes need vs want, i'm always looking for ways to make my taco more functional and the tailgate assist does just that.

more functional? whats more functional to a tail gate when it's only "assisting" it down? its more of a convenience but it fits right in there with something you want over need.
I think a tommy lift gate is more functional then a tailgate assist but im the guy who'd rather save the money and go on a road trip with the tacoma.

like i said need vs want. i think a lot of very satisfied customers would tend to disagree with you. i work in construction and my tailgate is up and down more then you can imagine, and don't assume all taco owners only use their trucks for off-roading, i drive on a paved road, not off the beaten path.

You know what...I work in the construction and landscape field...and I use my truck for most of the things I do. Like I said, you want something with function, get a tommy lift gate. I cant see why someone working in the construction field needs assistance in putting down a tail gate. The only assistance is a slower tail gate and less energy being used to slow down gravitational force. But it's your money and you want it...cool.

The tail gates assisted with an electrical motor with a pulley that has a cable lifting and lowering your tail gate remotely would probably be a better "function". Just saying.

My main reason was I just came from a tundra and got used to just flipping the handle and letting the tailgate fall nice and easy. A few times of doing that with the tacoma gate slamming down and I was ready for something. Toyota should have just put one on in the first place. No reason a $5 part couldn't be added to our $30k+ truck from the factory. Could I have learned to just hold the gate instead of just letting it fall, sure. This was fairly cheap, I wanted it, so there ya go ;)

Nissan Titans came stock with em. I havent had a truck with a slooow tail gate but thats one thing about Titans I dont like...very slow tail gates.
Ivfe got 2 2x4s braced inside my tailgate, so it's heavier than most stock ones. I wish my tacoma was more simple, but I guess others wish they were much more luxurious. Im glad there's a lot of ways we can modify to our wants and needs. lol

The only pain in the neck would be of you took off your tailgate frequently but otherwise, pretty cool product, def considering it
