EASY tweeter upgrade! (3rd gen non-JBL)

That's what I was hoping to hear. I am putting in some high efficiency JBLs in the doors and think these will be a great fit along w/ those.

I went a step down from the ones you got (GT7-96 & GT7-6)... didn't think that the base unit had that much power anyway, the sensitivity was equal to what you had, and was a bit less expensive. I am going to add a ton of sound padding around the doors to help seal out some road noise, so I'm hoping that adds to the improvement.

 

Keep us posted on how this works out! I have been thinking about getting those speakers myself

Just purchased the tweeters. Thanks OP for sharing this with us all. I haven't installed them yet and had a quick question. The video posted by ********* (https://youtu.be/YXRE7fuk36o) mentions removing the A-pillar panel before removing the tweeter cover. Is this necessary? For those of you who have performed this install, did you remove anything other than the tweeter cover?

Yes, you have to remove both a-pillar covers because the tweeter cover goes under the a-pillar cover. The tweeter cover pops off in an upward direction....so the a-pillar cover is in the way. A-pillar covers are super easy to take off, though. It's two 10mm (if I recall correctly) bolts on each side. The only issue I had was when popping the little covers off of the grab handle, one of the little plastic stays that keep the cover from coming completely off broke.....which is not a problem. Just be careful and use a plastic trim tool if possible or something that won't scratch plastic.

Thanks! In the video I posted above, they mention removing the battery as to not accidentally trigger the air bag. Did you end up disconnecting the battery? I'll probably do it just to be safe but I was wondering what others have done. It would be nice to not have things reset.

 

I did not disconnect the battery but not saying it is the correct way. I had no problems. Loving the speakers by the way!

I have never disconnected a battery for speaker installation in the past 42+ years. Head units absolutely disconnect.

 

So if i put this tweeter in and then some aftermarket 2 way 6x9's in the front... wouldn't it make sense to cut out the tweeters on the 6x9's? from what i see the both share the same channel (door and dash). Every watt counts when your using the stock head unit, and the tweeter on the 6x9's are not going to be doing a whole lot really.

What do you guys think?

 

That's a good question... not sure if the added tweeters help. I'm doing the same thing, so I'm wondering what folks think as well.

 

I'm assuming you're talking about a 2-way aftermarket speaker? If so, I think you might run into some problems as I believe those 2-way speakers that have the extra tweeter have a built-in crossover. I would just find a mid-range speaker that doesn't have the tweeter mounted separately.

 

Ive looked and there are no low rms 6x9 speakers that are not coaxial that would work with the stock head unit... or none that ive found. I plan on getting the Rockford Fosgate Prime

The only low powered 6x9 that is component would be the new jl audio c1-690, and cost quite a bit to just toss out the tweeter and crossover and use the kicker tweeter. You be better off getting an adapter plate for the jl tweeter and running wires and all that mess for the crossover they make for it. Which is exactly what i dont want to do... i just want a nice easy clean install with no messing of the wiring.

Im pretty sure on the 2 way 6x9 it is pretty easy to snip the wires for the tweeter and then just the woofer works.

 

My suggestion is to just replace the tweeters in the dash only and see if you want to go further. I know the door speakers are cheap, but they put out a surprising amount of bass and ive never experienced any distortion. The tweeters transform the sound of the stereo so much you may decide its not worth going any further.

 

I've already got all the speakers and I wanted to add some sound deadening material to the door to help reduce road noise, so I'm going to roll w/ what I started with. I figure it can't be any worse and if what you say is true about the tweeters, I should have a huge upgrade between the tweets, door speakers, and road noise reduction.

 

Ya thats probably a good idea IndyFastlane. I will save the money and add a subwoofer system. I already have JL audio amp jx500/1d from previous vehicle, just need to get Audiocontrol LC2iB as the Line out converter. Now for discrete sub and box (preferably 12' and ported)... saw a setup at ********* with Image dynamics sub, but to ship into canada is pretty crazy. Ill wait till more offerings come around.

 

I have 2 way Kickers in the front and rear doors with these tweeters. Sounds amazing as is.
