easy way to test 4 wheel drive

What do you guys do to test out your 4 wheel drive without having to go in a mud hole?

 

This. You can feel it engage and disengage.

 

Worst case, just fine a grassy patch. Wet grass would be even better. A dirt road would work. Anywhere the tires don't have positive traction just to make sure it engages and disengages.

 

Just to make sure it operates correctly? Strait pavement, no turns whatso ever, engage it how it says to in the owners manual, keep the speed under 55mph in 4hi and under 25mph in 4lo

 

I guess I was just unsure if (try to explain this) If I turn the knob to 4hi and the light comes on, am I really sure its actually in 4x4. If something didn't transfer correctly would the 4x4 light show? Thanks for the quick replies. This site is awesome!

 

If it didn't engage, the light would just keep flashing. You can also usually tell because the steering gets very heavy.

Jack stands on all four and just put it in gear. You can stop rotation with your hand to see which wheels have power and which ones don't. Be smart about it though and make sure it's balanced well.

 

Back up into a snow bank or even dirt berm. Your rear tires will dig in. Turn on 4wd. Do you miraculously start crawling up in reverse? Boom.

 

Jack up one front wheel turn on key put it in 4WD and see if you can turn the front tire by hand.
