    If you take the door panel off then you can pop the plastic welds that hold the ring in then you can take the ring out. the pop the black plastic in the center out.

    once I had the ring by itself I sanded it down a little then put a couple of coats of spray paint on it

    I just had an old underarmor shirt laying around and I used patches out of it, but I would recommend going and getting something a little thicker cause this stuff doesnt like to stay
