I read a post somewhere where someone mentioned the ebrake design changed on the Tacoma at some point in time.

I can't locate anymore info and am about to replace an axle with one from 1 year newer and want to make sure the ebrake setup stayed the same.

Actually I finally found something right before posting this. So I guess it's the backing plate that changes between 02-03. My only option then would be to press out the axle shaft/bearing and swap the backing plate?

Yep, there is the e-brake cable "over or under" the spring pack. Outside of the different axle for ABS/NON ABS, there does not seem to be any consistent info as to what years, ABS or not, and/or trim levels came with each e-brake configuration. Only that "under" seems more prevalent in the later years.
Yes, swapping the backing plate will require the whole bearing press operation that should include a NEW bearing and IIRC there might have been a minor change in said bearing in later years. Not positive, so check into that.

yeah, this has been a pain in the ass. it's $100 to press the new bearing too which adds too much cost.

i guess what i'm really trying to find out is if a 98-00 TRD w/abs axle/backing plate is exactly the same as my 02 TRD w/abs axle/backing plate.

So this is odd. I called the Toyota dealership and they said the backing plate is the same part number from 95-2004. I wonder if they modified the plate to accept either type of ebrake so they would only have to manufacture one part.

Edit: Here's what I'm wondering. Is the backing plate actually different? Or is it the bracket that bolts into the backing plate that is different. If someone here has an 03/04 and could take a picture of where the ebrake cable goes into the backing plate that would confirm what is going on here. I'm trying to find some pics on google but its hard to find a good angle.

OK after a lot of picture viewing and video watching i can see the difference. the ebrake connects at the same point but it's rotated like 90 degrees. that seems to be the only difference...which makes this is a no go :\
