So, trying to remove the needle bearing from the front driver side differential of a 2011. Got the fancy ECGS tool after partially destroying the bearing with a slide hammer. Not sure if the tool wasn't properly centered or not, but no luck yet on getting the bearing out. Any recommendations on what to do next? Can I put the plate on the other way, try to get everything centered and hope for the best? Otherwise, I'm thinking I'mma have to get it towed to a shop.

I would make sure the tool that goes into the diff is actually on the needle bearing and not getting stuck on the gear itself.

    :confused::confused::confused:

So it was pulling that thick ass piece of steel into the diff bending it rather than extracting the needle bearing?!

Yeah. I was surprised, didn't seem that hard to turn. And I'm fairly certain I'm on the bearing and not the gear splines behind it. Speaking of which, that gear with the splines, is it supposed to wiggle around? because mine can.

There is play in it. I doubt you got it attached to the spline, did you stuff a rag or bag in there so you wouldn’t drop the tool in the diff?

I’d definitely contact ECGS though and be like “Y’all seen this shit before?!”

if the piece you are holding is that bent, in what condition is the smaller puller looking like in the diff. Clearly the tool wasn’t central to the bearing and snagged.

I’d throw that piece in the vice and try to flatten it a bit more than as is. Or a BFH and smash it flat. It will not be able to be central if not a bit flatter than as is.

post up a few pictures of inside the diff, to see condition of bearing, unless you’ve already successfully removed it at this point.

sorry to ask this, but the steps on the smaller tool are facing you when you tried to pull.

Got a bag inside to make sure I don't lose the back. and I'll send ECGS an email with the pic in a minute, good idea. I'll see if I can flatten it whit a BGH, started to use it flipped the other way, but good call on making sure it's flat to keep it centered. I'll see if I can get a pic of the inside, but the tool is stuck for the moment, as I can't unscrew the rod from the back piece.

Here's some pics, including 1 from before I put the tool in.

If you got a pen magnet, I’d be lifting out as many of those rollers as I could, so they don’t get lost in the diff sump. Hopefully the ones so far missing out of the bearing are accounted for.

If the puller is stuck, I would put a nut on end of ready rod and give it a tap inwards. The tool itself vs the extractor are not that much different, so more than likely it is the tool stuck more that the bearing.

free it and re center it.

Photos of mine, it did bite a little for me, on splines. And as above size for size they are very close. 464C954E-DCE7-4A00-8943-3192DABD166A.jpg1656A184-F1D4-4B32-A297-17E2160BF230.jpg

The tool can wiggle around, it's not stuck, it's that the rod won't unscrew from the back piece, I'm assuming the threads got a little damage. Could probably get it with vicegrips, but that would be a very slow process. And thanks for the pics, good to know. Gonna go try it again, try to get it as centered as I can

You also need the threaded rod as centered as possible too.
If the rod isn’t centered, you’re going to be prying the bearing out.
You don’t want that, you want to PULL the bearing out.

And yes, the spider gear will wiggle/move some in the carrier.

I'm having a hard time seeing how the puller is seated in the bearing, but the flat side should be pulling on the bearing, and the bevel side should be away from the bearing. The bevel side should be pointed toward the gears/center.

Ok got it out, might have not been perfectly lined up the first time, don't know. I appreciate all the feedback y'all, still learning the whole wrenching thing, so if something doesn't go smoothly the first try or two, I start panicking a little lol. Anyways, hopefully the install of everything will go smoothly this time around. Maybe beer will help. And, here's some pics of the carnage, still gotta fish around inside the diff in case there's stray bearings.

I used a magnetic pickup tool to fish out the broken lip of the race.
I’m fairly sure the lip gets broken when you “tap” the in behind bearing.
I guess the puller might have broken it, but I’m pretty I did it punching the tool into place.

    Mine came out pretty easy.

Wow I've done over 20 ecgs bushings, using the same removal tools. Never seen the tool bend like that. Glad you got it out OP!
