So I lifted the Tacoma on a full OME kit and I get the front end vibes. Planning on getting the ECGS bushing and replacing it, but I haven't found a video of someone actually pulling the CV and the needle bearing.

Has anyone in/around Austin done this that would be willing to give me some guidance?

If not, does anyone have a good shop recommendation where I could get it done? Called 4WheelParts and they won't install anything from a vendor they don't carry.

    Happy New Year!

Me too. I had another TW member give me a very detailed description of how to do it but would probably like a step by step video or someone around Delaware who has done it.

The video on the ECGS web site makes the job look super easy, that's because it is. I was a little hesitant to do this, but it was not hard at all. The hardest part is getting all of the other stuff out of the way to get to the bushing.

I've seen some videos of pulling the inner CV from the front diff of an older 4Runner, and I figure that's close to a Tacoma front end. I just haven't seen a video on the entire process. Maybe I'll shoot one if/when I'm able to do mine. I'm not new to working on cars in general, but installing a factory bolt-on supercharger is different from pulling an internal differential part, so I'm also legitimately worried about dropping the extractor in the front diff. Ultimately I'd prefer to do it at home because I like knowing how it was done, but I also like actually doing this type of stuff.

image.jpg Remove wheel, remove Hub nut, remove caliper/rotor, disconnect spindle from LCA and hang everything out of the way. Get a CV puller like this (the rope in the picture, make the CV removal super easy). Once all that is out of the way, stick your fingers inside to feel where the needle bearing sits (this is important). The ECGS bushing is slightly longer and you don't want to drive it in too far. Stuff a small rag or plastic bag inside the diff. this will prevent anything from falling in there. Getting the removal tool inside is not as hard as you would think it would be. Just be sure it is seated right when you start pulling on it.

The CV puller can be picked up @SoutheastOverland
The slide loop goes around the CV. The black loop gets a 5lb hammer. A quick pull with the hammer pops the CV right out. I have used mine several times.

@holyfield19, thanks! That CV puller is money. I did NOT like the idea of whacking at it with a hammer and pry bar. Maybe on a 15 year old rig that's been designated as trail-only.

What did you use to tap the bushing in? The ECGS video looks like they put together some combination of nuts and bolt that happen to fit perfectly (mainly that brass nut that was actually contacting the bushing). It looked like the diameter was perfect and it was flanged perfectly, too.

The only other video I saw of the bushing install, the guy used a socket and socket extension, but he said the socket fit snug INSIDE the bushing. That just doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Oops, just looked on the ECGS site and they sell the install tool. It's a race driver.

ECGS sells a kit for the installation as well. I bought the same one at harbor freight for less $$.

Awesome. Same exact kit for $10 less, and less the shipping cost of it, too.

Got a link to the kit you bought? I'm looking on Amazon but there is a ton of different ones. Thanks!

Having the right tools always makes me more confident in taking on a project. It's half the battle.

The link I posted should be correct. I just checked it. If not, harbor freight bearing and race driver set.

Absolutely. I'm finally to the point where I have pretty much every tool I need to work on my truck (except the bearing driver haha) and it has made things so much easier. Not having to jimmy rig shit is so nice.

    Thanks for the link!

Shit thanks, I don't know how I missed that the first time.

I think it was, but the mobile version. My desktop browser (Safari) didn't like it too much, but I just jumped over to the site and searched "race driver".
