It came out easily for me using one side of a pickle fork. The angle on it seems to be just right for popping it out. Plus it doubles as a pry bar.

That's a solid tip. We fought getting it out of my cousin's 3rd gen.

I didn’t use a pry bar or much force. There is a rectangle box attached to the cv that has a few indentions on it that fit a large flat head screwdriver perfectly. Tapped on the screwdriver with a 3 pound hammer and it came right out.

Definitely could be the reason it put up a fight.

I just got mine out, was a pain! It didn't just tap out, I feel like I rotated it a few times trying each flat spot. I ended finding a video on youtube of a nylon strap tied around it and wrap the other end around a hammer. Worked like a charm! https://youtu.be/KWnYnSxBnA0?t=1m50s

If you are putting a ECGS bushing in, be careful installing the removal tool. Picture shows where I followed the instructions and just gave it a little tap tap when the little tool piece was being put into place to pull the old needle bearing out. I only tapped it lightly but I guess that was too hard. I pulled the needle bearing out to find I had broken off a small piece of the bearing. Oh shit! I took a small magnet and retrieved 3 small pieces that fit together to show that I luckily had got it all. Then I removed the plastic bag I had stuffed inside. Whew! Close one.
I post this for anyone doing this to give a heads up. I should have just continued to wiggle the part around until I managed to get it in position. 20190705_124201.jpg

Yea thats sketchy, dont want to leave broken pieces in there by accident.

I had to modify the tool that i used to fit fully behind the needle bearing, its definately a tight fit

Question: Is it necessary to remove the axle nut to pull the CV when installing the ECGS bushing on a 2nd gen? I just noticed the torque spec for the axle nut is 173 ft. lbs.! I don't have a torque wrench big enough to re-tighten that monster.

If not, what is the procedure for removing the CV from the diff?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes. Axle nut screws onto the end of the CV shaft so it has to come off to get the shaft out.
    Good luck.

I've actually just been told that I can do it without removing the entire CV. This is a pic that someone else sent

Well I never knew... First I have heard of that. Is it difficult to swing the steering knuckle out far enough to do it?
I replaced my CV shafts at the time so I had it all broke down anyway.

How hard was it to swing the knuckle out of the way, @Dalegribble02 ? I bet that saved a decent amount of time..

I'm not Dale, but I assume he turned the steering wheel all the way to remove the LH axle without breaking the steering knuckle free. I've done this on other vehicles if just doing CV boots or a transmission output seal.

edit- on some vehicles you need to at least break the ball joint

I was also changing wheel bearings so I broke my Tacoma pretty far down.

Copy that Steve. I really haven't done sh*t as far as technical maintenance on vehicles besides the typical motorcycle brakes, oil changes, etc.. But, as a carpenter I hope I'll be able to tackle this one without too much of a struggle. Thanks for the tip!

When I did the install about 3 yrs ago I had to tap the CV into the diff with a wood block and a hammer for the last 1/4 inch or so. I know I must have done something wrong and probably damaged something but no leaks or problems so far. I will look at it more closely and be more careful if I have to take it apart again.

Was it difficult to maneuver around it/ get enough space to drive in the new bushing. I've heard it can be a pain to hammer the new one in
