Any 75w90 reg or syn will suffice. People get all pissey about brands, etc, but honestly it'll run on almost whatever. Fill plug is right behind the drives side CV axle. 10mm hex socket required.

Yup. And a quick search here looks like the fill plug is in the same location.

Thank you so much for this thread. I just noticed everything near the driver's side CV is coated in gear oil. After reading your thread I'm certain I put the seal in backwards. Wish I had noticed it sooner though since it's been about nine months since I installed the bushing and new seal. I drained the fluid and there was probably less than a quart in it. There were no large metal bits and only a small amount of shavings. Any chance my differential is going to be fine if I put the seal in correctly and refill it with fluid? Is the bushing potentially damaged from being run low on oil? Again, thanks for the post because I might have never figured out I put the seal in backwards.

The flat side is supposed to be out.
But I’m not sure it’s an issue anymore, since that was posted back in 2019:thumbsup:

I know this is old, but I have a leak drivers side now after prolly 1k mi doing the 5.29 ecgs gears w/needle swap. The gap from the end of the cvs into the diff is slightly larger drivers side than pass and appears to be getting slightly larger and now a small amount of oil can be seen. Could the snap ring be bound up or could I have maybe not set the cv all the way in after swapping out the clamshell? I'll snap a pic this morning to update, thanks guys

All the CV axles I’ve seen on these trucks have maybe 1/8” play in and out. You can grab the cv at the diff and slide it in and out. You’ll feel it stop when it hits the snap ring.

If you don’t feel it “clunk” when you pull out on it. You probably didn’t get the axle seated all the way in.

Also, the axle seal should be seated flush with the differential, it doesn’t need to be set back into the differential. The further in you seat it, the more chance it will leak.

    Pull the axle.

    Double check the seal.

I did the complete 3rd member/clamshell core swap from ecsg along with all new bearings (including the needle delete) and seals with the 5.29sc already installed. Didn't mess with any of the seals. It was a bitch getting the drivers cv back in, as I think I was fighting the snap ring not knowing the trick about putting grease on it to hold it in place. Also on the drive over the 90, I realized the vibration seems to go away when going around turns. Def noticeable more straight ahead

I’d check and see if the cv is still locked in.
