Seems to me it would make some difference, since it pushes the engine a little harder. But I'm thinking the difference is not worth worrying about.
Has anyone had the TSB done on your truck?

I had 62-18 TSB done and still can't stand driving it without ECT on.

I would think ECT is break even or better. It uses more stable and linear shift points, avoiding a lot of search and unnecessary upshift and downshift. Probably better for the engine and transmission in the long run.

Everything that Ive read and seen first hand with all the mods like ECT, OVT, ShiftSense Pro and the Pedal Commander is that there isnt really anything to fix the issues with the 3rd Gen Tacoma's other then trading them in. I have a 2017 Quicksand SR5 SB 4x4 with just under 15,000 miles on it that im really considering trading in or selling next month to get a 4 runner.

Actually, there are many, many people on TW who attest that one or several of the mods you listed have made them like how their tacoma drives. But you should just go ahead and get rid of your truck if you really don't like it (and no need to post about it any more as it doesn't really help anyone).

I will also say that once my SR5 learned me (~10K) it drove much much better. Honestly, I thought nothing of buying the OR. The ECT for me isn’t a ‘OMG!’ difference, but just makes 30 mph+ driving so much more expected and traditional. I honestly don’t feel the AT is undrivable from the start. However, when I decided on a taco, I already knew about the transmission learning process.

Sorry if Ive offended anyone I was just trying to say that Ive tried all of the mods and none of them are a OMG driving feeling. Yes the truck does drive much better, but it doesnt drive as a $30,000 plus truck should drive in my opinion. I do love the truck and thats why Ive kelp this long and spent the extra money to get it drive right. Im not hating on the Tacoma just voicing my opinion. I do believe that it does help others to make a decision to hear all the pros and cons from others who have tried. Again Sorry if Ive offended anyone.

I don’t think you offended anyone. I think some folks get tired of reading threads “about how shitty the Taco is and how Truck XYZ is so much better.” The point is, this is a Taco forum and that just comes across as trolling. Clearly we can all agree that they are a popular truck. It just isn’t for everyone.

For me, the ECT Always On mod solves a logical issue of remembering to push the button every time I get in. Instead of it being an afterthought once I first experience an errant shift.

A comment on 4Runners - I test drove one with the wife and they are absolute slugs compared to my Taco (I have the OVTune package). I think you would only be happy with a 4Runner if you threw on the available supercharger. It was a dog. OVtune 1.05 is fantastic - different truck all together.

How does it compare to a stock taco though? I would expect the taco w/ tune to out perform a stock runner. Thanks

While I can say I'm still a bit disappointed with mine... It has been getting better.

First thing I did was the 62-18 TSB update. Right afterwards, I started filling the tank exclusively with 93 octane.
I always use ECT and only recently have I stopped using "S" mode... allowing it to do it's thing in "D"only.
(I STILL need to buy the "always on" mod.)

I must say... the difference is like night and day from stock. Even with 33" tires, it's getting more tolerable.

I think if I still had the stock tires on it, I'd be perfectly fine with it's performance.

I may try the OV tune when the handheld becomes available. I expect that will probably resolve any remaining issues I have with my truck.

The disappointing part is... I/we should NOT have to go through all this bullshit to make the trucks run satisfactorily.

    My wife and I have a 16 4runner and 18 Tacoma.
In stock form, I'd put my money on the Tacoma... but not much. The 4runner is plenty peppy... and would probably be a good race.

The 4runner is however... hands down the better driving experience. If the engine and trans combo would have been used in the Tacoma, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

@mesojdm my module seems to disconnect randomly without my disengaging. Might Happens once every 3-4 weeks. Any thoughts unless? something else is causing it to disengage.

I noticed it today while driving on highway for about an hour at 70mph. Could it be EZpass radars ghosting it?

I’m not really sure what you are describing. You are having ECT turn off while you are driving, and then turn back on? If so, I would suspect a power issue, as the unit will restore ECT when power returns (startup).
If you are describing ECT staying on, but the unit power cycling... I would still suspect power. Your unit is where you can see/monitor it?

I have done my city stop/start as well as run my 6 hour stretch a few times with no issues. Hope that helps?

Mine has been cutting on an off the last few months also. Its a bit different in that it either comes on when I start the truck or it doesn't. The first time it happened I disconnected it from the fuse box and then reconnected it and it started working again. Worked fine for several weeks and then it started not turning on again when I would start the the truck. That time I forgot to do anything and after a few weeks it started turning on when the truck started like normal! Now its back to not working again... very weird. Any ideas @mesojdm?

This is what is happening to mine. Either it turns on when I start or doesn't. I have noticed that if I put it into gear quickly sometimes it won't turn on. So I simply wait a second or two before putting into gear. 2 times it has turned off on the road randomly and never went back on. When I started car again it remained off. Then I had to press on for 5 seconds for it to turn on again when I startup. It has now worked properly again. Strange. I am wondering if EZ pass on the highway flashes it, or if the device powers down every now and then similar to a computer crashing :) Thoughts @mesojdm?

No way EZ pass is a logical reason...

It is likely a power issue. Unit loses power for a short period, and then the module thinks it needs to press the button again, therefore turning it off. I would pop open the module and see if you can see anything strange on the incoming wires. I'd trace the red wire all the way back and see if there is anything that stands out also with everything out and the truck on (ECT ON), Id start wiggling the red wire and see if you can replicate the problem. If it keeps doing it PM me and I will get it replaced.

@mesojdm Could also be debouncing delay needs to be increased?

    Just a heads up.

I have started a new batch of 20 or so. Need to take care of some others that were having issues with older units first then ill post em up here, likely this weekend.

Are those 20 using the new design, or still the original?

If they're the original version, are there any updates on the new design?
