On my 2022 Tacoma with the ECT on the truck does not seem to get in high gear.If I activate the cruise control it goes into the higher gear then I can take the cruise off and it seems to stay there. Is this normal operation or do I have a tranny problem?I do know the tranny sure loves to change gears a lot and kinda of annoying!

I think ECT is supposed to increase the shift points so you can access higher RPMs. I'm not sure if it changes cruise control at all

With the ECT on in my 2021 the ECU strategy keeps the rpm up much higher by staying in a lower gear. Its great for the local grades and when I tow. No more constant down shifting. Toyota strategy likes to keep your rpm low all the time for fuel mileage. I get 17.2 mpg driving like an old fart and that strategy lacks for me. Bottom line is its normal.

Since one of its purposes is towing, it might lock out 6th. I use ECT a lot and have not noticed that. One thing I have noticed is it seems to change the torque converter lock/unlock strategy, I suspect to aide with compression braking.
Most of the time, I drive around town in ECT and use the sport shift function. I like the way it works where I live because it’s hilly.

Ect also does something with the mapping of the ecu that affects engine power. I can tell you my 2020 v6 has a different engine tone when ect is pushed. Transmission shift points are changed to. When i had ect on the truck sucked fuel like a v8. Its pretty useless for me. Any towing i do is best without it.

Mine still goes into 6th with ECT on, it just doesn’t shift up there until about 75-80 MPH (on a flat road). I’ve make sure by looking at my rpms at that speed with ECT on, then turning ECT off and shifting into S6 and I get the same rpms. Then I’ll shift into S5 and rpms will go up a bit.

I always drive with it on. That’s probably why my MPG went from 19 to 15 after I started using it lol

I didn’t notice any issue with my 2016 auto. ECT changes the shift points so that the engine runs at a slightly higher rpm thus having slightly more torque/power at a given speed.

i have the "ECT on at startup" mod and don't really see much difference in gas mileage.

While my truck doesn't have an S6, it will do the above in drive if ECT is on. I swear you can watch the gas gauge going down.

Incorrect. ECT does not prevent the transmission from shifting into 6th, it just changes the point at which the transmission shifts.

I think I remember you (or maybe someone else) saying on here somewhere in the past that they didn’t have S6… How can that be when we all have the same transmission (AFAIK, there are no variants of this trans for the Tacoma)?

I'm telling you S6 just doesn't appear on the led screen like the rest of them...always been that way. You could keep bumping the gear shift up, but S5 is all you'll see on the display. The transmission otherwise works perfect..couldn't be more pleased with everything. Truck has enough torque in all the gears to satisfy me. You'll get S6 in the d mode.

I don't think this is correct. My 2017 and my 2020 both have S6 when in S mode, ECT on or not. The only variant of the 3rd gen that doesn't have 6th gear is the 2.7L MT. I don't see a reason for you to not have it...

It's not correct. Either his truck is malfunctioning or he's mistaken. Everyone else has a 6th gear in S mode. I even took a picture of my dash showing it once but he ignored that.:notsure:

    Here, let's try it again.
