I never really liked the location of the ect button, so I decided to move it into the gear shift knob. I’ve had the parts to do the mod but just hadn’t gotten around to it. Once I flashed to ovtune 1.05 and realized how much I like the tune with the ect button on I decided it was time to get this done.

After figuring out the parts I would need and making the harness, the actual installation was simple. The harness I made just plugs inline with the existing wires. All the trim pieces that needed removed just pull off, no tools required. Running the wire from the button to the gear shift boot was pretty straight forward as well.

The only modification to the truck was the gear shift knob and the bezel thing right below it. I needed to drill a hole in the bezel for the wires to go through.

All in all, it turned out well and was a lot simpler to build and install than I was expecting. Even though I never used the button much I always found it annoying to turn on. Or maybe I’m just that lazy and didn’t like having to lean forward and straighten my arm. Regardless, it’s a lot more convenient to use now. My favorite thing about the button being in the gear shift knob is being able to turn it on without having to take my eyes off the road to look for it. Being on the gear shift knob it’s easy to find.

As many of you know I sell the knurled replacement radio knobs. I’m considering selling this as a kit if there’s enough interest. I would like to hear your feedback and if people want a kit there are some details that still need worked out.

Now put it on both sides of the steering wheel with labels that say "NOS".

Fun aside, that's a cool mod, I like it.

Oh, so close! All the hard work is done, you just needed to put a flip-cap into the shift knob...

    Cool idea.

I think you should get with @mesojdm and see about combining this with an ECT-on-at-startup mod.

Nice! I was interesting in moving it somewhere near or on the steering wheel but shift knob seems easier and just as convenient.

before i got the ECT "on at startup " mod i wanted to use one of the buttons on the steering wheel that i never use. just could not figure out how to and what wires to tap under the dash at the steering column. my biggest issue was i would forget to push the ECT button then when i realized it was not on i would reach down and push the START button. muscle memory thing. the mod cured all of the above

I might be mistaken (I'm old) but that seems like where it was on my old '96 Tacoma. Great idea in any case. I would be in for this.

Nicely done man & I'd be interested!

I always thought the factory location was kinda awkward since most of the time this button was on a shifter or end of a stalk before.

So did you leave the button under the dash or put something else in there?
