lower gears help you climb hills so sure, why not? shifting later won't damage your engine. only annoying thing is on longer downhills it wants to shift down, which give you some engine breaking.

these days i drive with ect on and in s-4 or s-5 when going downhill. that upshifts me most of the time into 5th. 6th isn't much better on the hills around here so i don't mind ect blocking it out.

Living in Western NC, I ALWAYS use ECT and S mode here in the hills and country roads. Have for years. Always get 20+MPG. You won't hurt a thing. The truck likes to run in it's power band which is higher than many guys are used to.

I do now, and have always used S mode for engine braking as well.

I live and commute in the mountains of PA and the ECT button definitely comes in handy.

Alot of complaints on the 3rd gen transmission but I dont mind it at all and get great mpg.
