Just over a year and 20,000 miles. ECT and S4 or S5 all of the time. Mileage doesn't vary all that much from operating in Drive. Still get 20-22 mpg. Had the latest TSB done. At least now it doesn't lug off the line when I really step on it.

I haven't even had olit long enough to make a payment! 1st tank of gas I averaged 19.5. Ive used the ect button for about half of this tank of gas ( which is only my second tank of gas!) And im averaging 20 and Im about to be empty. I know its not a huge gain, but i didn't expect it to be better.

Agree with this. Surprised the comment didnt cause a greater crapstorm. People get a lil touchy about their Tacos.

On hills you gotta work the shifter...put it in S mode and lock the gear you want, its probably not going to shift much better. I have found your have to be somewhat active in shifting with this particular automatic.

Wow, you really must keep close tabs on your gas mileage. How do you know the slight 1/2 MPG variation is a result of the ECT?
Other conditions could account for that slight a difference, especially with a week old truck.

This truck is really a semi-auto. Ecu in D is a reuh-tard. Truck should be in permanent S mode with the ECT button on the steering wheel for easy immediate access.

Actually I would like a four-wheel-drive "sports truck". The 1990 Tacoma Truck (pre Taco) was marketed as just that.

Averaged 27MPG on my 1hr drive home last night. You guys just need to learn how to drive. Stock or not, its all about driving habits. So many damn Toyota engineers on this forum.

What about the TSB that supposedly fixes it or OvTune? For the most part I’ve learned to live with the crap shifting after 13k miles, unless it’s in cruise control.

5 days a week, I drive a Hemi Charger with flashy lights, so whatever speed fix I might want is addressed on an almost daily basis.

What I DON'T WANT is a daily driver that annoys me... daily. Just to maintain speed up an overpass, you're downshifting hard into 3rd to make that breathless 'lil motor scream.

The Tacoma has the tough-guy facade, but no muscle to back it up...

    Actually obtainable...

    with a 30mph tailwind, down a 6% grade.

(I'm just kidding, but that seems a bit "optimistic")

First thing that came to mind when I just saw this thread. I think people just like to hear their engine rev; thinking that sound equates to speed and power. The results makes sense, as a tow/haul mode would keep the truck in the torque band which does not necessarily equal speed (especially at higher speed).

Best way to make this truck move is to actually press the gas pedal.

Uh huh. I took a long trip yesterday and was thinking about all the things mentioned in this thread so I decided to experiment. I drove with the fuel economy screen on and found out some things.

First thing is this truck hates inclines. Any sort of uphill grade - no matter how small - kills mpg’s instantly. The other thing is speed. Keep it at around 60 -65 and you will get sticker type mileage.

On the way back home, driving conscientiously, I was averaging over 23 - 24 at one point. That is until I got sick of it and decided I need to get home before Tuesday and just drove the thing normally. And by normally I mean driving the speed limit which is 75 or even slightly under with occasional bursts of speed to pass slower vehicles.

I ended up averaging 17. By the time I got home. You guys that live in heavily populated eastern states might get away with driving 55 and under, but you do that here and your gonna end up getting greased by a semi or at the least spending an extra couple days on the road during trips to make up for the distances traveled.

Yah it could be anything. Just figured I would try the ECT button... I do keep tabs on gas mileage.

Its muscle is its reliability and off-road capability. Always been that way with Toyota trucks. Fun facts:

Weight to power ratio (lower is better):
    1st gen Tacoma - 17.90
    2nd gen Tacoma - 17.60
    3rd gen Tacoma - 16.00 *BEST*

    Towing capacity:
    1st gen Tacoma - 5000 lb
    2nd gen Tacoma - 6500 lb
    3rd gen Tacoma - 6800 lb *BEST*

    Fuel economy MPG (city/highway):
    1st gen Tacoma - 15/18
    2nd gen Tacoma - 16/20
    3rd gen Tacoma - 18/22 *BEST*

    3rd gen be like...:benchpress:

Not much yet. Previous owner put some oversized tires and rims
Screw the ECT Power button. I just found a used pedal commander on Kijiji. Hopefully that wakes her up.
