Not sure why the Manual trucks have the AI programming.

FINALLY got this done in VA (Richmond area).

I was at the dealer for 3 hours (25 min of which was likely spent on the 30k mile service) convincing the service advisor and tech that this is a legit issue with a legit tsb that can apply to my truck. Talking to the SA was the equivalent to talking to a brick wall. The tech seemed reasonable and offered to ride along with me so I could illustrate what the TSB should be fixing. After a ride along they agreed to plug in and run an ECM update although my paperwork does not reference any TSB.

I'm wondering if there's an easy (also cheap) way to check my calibration ID to see if the update was actually performed since the lack of TSB number leaves me wondering.

IMHO, your efforts should be rewarded.

Here is Frank's post on checking the ECU ID with an OBD adapter and the OBD Fusion app:

No problem. @MOC221_ is a big fan of OBD Fusion.

I have been meaning to give it a run as it seems like it might be more capable than Torque Pro.

It's a pretty good app, especially with the $10 add-on that gives you hundreds of Toyota specific PIDs. Data is addictive lol.

I tried using it to log engine data, but it seems the BT interface is too slow for that.

If your in SoCal i can plug in the PC with Techstream and show your Cal ID. Maybe even do the update if it isn't already done.

Sorry, didn't see you were in Virginia. But still you can go back and simply ask them to tell you what the ECU CAL id is for your truck. Or a member with an app or Techstream can help you too.

I have the same experience. Stutters ever so slightly when it’s cold. 2nd gear in 2000 rpm level.

Like I posted earlier - my 2018 Sport with the new software appears to have reverted back to it's old ways to some degree as well.

I wanted to post an update - I just got back from a vacation in Colorado, which is the first long trip I have taken with the truck. I can say that this 3.5L is affected by altitude a lot more than the 4.0L that was in my 2003 4Runner (I spent a lot of time between 8000 and 11000ft.) - I really had to keep the RPMS up, and even then, the truck struggled to hold its speed. I was disappointed with my fuel mileage going and coming home on mostly flat roads in Kansas and Eastern Colorado- I was averaging around 17.5mpg with 89 octane 10% Ethanol blends for most of the trip before I got into the Rocky Mountains. The speed limit was 75mph and I was typically going within 5mph of that with a light load using the adaptive cruise control. At altitude, I was seeing around 24mpg per tank of mostly highway driving, through the mountains. I typically get about 20mpg commuting to work, which is mostly highway with 87 octane no ethanol - that hasn't changed between the old and new software. My truck now has 3700mi on it, so it is still breaking in. I will say that the hesitation that returned to some extent seemed to be eliminated with 91octane, so it may be a result of an aggressive antiknock algorithm. As others have mentioned, it is worse when the engine is cold.

Something weird happened to me twice when descending the mountains - when I would get back on the throttle after engine braking for a while, the truck hesitated really bad for over a second then went back to driving normal. I have never experienced that before.

    I’m lucky if I get over 15.3mpg

That’s rough. I drive fairly quickly and get 18-20 often. Rarely lower on normal driving. Seem like it likes 50-70, over 75 it starts to go down.

    18 Off-road MT for reference

Dam, what terrain. I’m Phoenix so fairly flat and dry around sea level. I do head up north and down south but it’s mostly highway. Going to flagstaff and into the mountains it goes down for sure

Flat terrain. Lots of stop signs though.

That’ll do it. My daily commute is only 3 miles each way but with 2 stop signs, multiple turns and a stop light, I only return about 14 mpg. Once I get out on the main roads, it’s up near 19-20.

After driving for a week with the T-SB-0058-18 I will say its better but definitely not 100%. While the improved throttle response makes it easier to drive, it still stumbles, just not quite as bad. I really feel like Toyota took a major step backwards with this engine. My 15 Tacoma 4.0L had more real world power, better gas mileage, and no drivability issues. It's sad because I traded a 4runner for this Tacoma due to squirrelly handling, and now this. Pretty sure this will be my last Toyota, very disappointing
