Any details on this? Sounds like I may or may not want to register my truck until the update.

The first post is updated with this new TSB and the associated software files.

Yes. I was in that same spot when the TSB for 04B14 dropped. I held out for a while, running the 04B13 2.0 tunes, and then ran a couple tanks of 04B14 Stock to get a feel for it. It felt a lot like the old 1.05 tunes but missing the bottom end torque. IMHO, I would see what @OVTune says and maybe run it for a while if you feel like experimenting.

Actually looking at your profile, OVT is already supporting the 04B81 tunes. So update and enjoy 04B81!

Might be a dumb question - but what is an average time it takes to apply an ECU update to these trucks? I have a few guys who I am going to tune their trucks, but they don't have more than 10-15mins to let me work on it...if it only takes a few mins to update the ECU no problem, but if it takes 20+mins, no bueno.

Ive done a bunch of them. Typically 5-10 minutes. I can do a TSB and tune in <15.

For an MT, it is about double the time of an OVT flash. For an AT, it is a lot longer. Maybe four times an OVT flash? A half hour is probably on target to flash the TSB, flash the tune, Reset, Idle, and a short drive.

I wonder how long Toyota will take to release a potential 04B05. Part of me thinks it's possible they will but the other part of me thinks a truck that's 4 years old won't see an update since it costs them money to do so. Then again, I guess it will cost the dealership(s) more than Toyota.

I fully expect it. They dropped 04B14 earlier just this year for 2016 and 2017 MTs only. :D

    It was a noticeable improvement.

It seems I'll be flashing the newly released 04B81 today. Think others would like to know the findings? Haven't seen any other mention on it. Honestly though, stock on my 2020 drives much better than my 2017 did without any ECU update. Not sure how much of a change I'll notice going from what I have now (04B80) to 04B81.

I think that folks will certainly like to know the differences that you feel, esp as some of them will be trying to judge the worth of buying credits in vF to Unlock these new ECU IDs. No one has really been down this route as 04B80 and 04B81 only came from the factory until now.

Yes. It seems that most MYs had better driving experiences than the last. From my observation of the posts around here, 04B12 seemed to be close to 04A70, as was the similarity between the TSB tunes for 04B13 and 04B71. 04B14 seemed to be close to 04B91.

If you are tuned, the 04B81 tune will give you even more contrast. I would recommend getting a full tank in 04B81 Stock just to get a feel of it completely settled?

I saw that one poking through the 2019 stuff also. It only took them 5yrs to get serious about what the customer thinks?

I'd be curious to know if your crawl control worked while on 04B80? If not, does 04B81 correct it? There is a thread about it being hit and miss, some 2020 truck it works fine, others it won't climb anything (mine included).
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/crawl-control-not-working.657481/

I unlocked 04B80 about 2 weeks ago, so I am not in a rush to update unless there is a real benefit.

That is a really good question.

It would also be very interesting if the Engine ECU has an effect. My amateur guess would be that the problem should be in the ABS ECU, which is not modified by this change? If something pops up here, one way or the other, I will definitely note it in the 1st Post.

I have 04B81 on my 2020 built in July. I have nothing to compare it too, but if there are any questions I can answer.....

Post 383 in the CC thread indicates that it is likely tied to the ABS ECU, but it will be interesting as there isn't any clear difference between working and non-working trucks.

Ill be happy to hear if you feel there is any difference between the two. I've had my 2020 for a year now would love to see if there is any noticeable improvement.

Good question, but unfortunately I live in a very flat area. How much of a slope will prove/disprove crawl control adjustments? Might be able to find something to test on.

You can test it anywhere. 4Lo and drive straight. If you have the 2LM, you don't even have to worry about driving straight. :D
